# Historic Rustic-Modern Dwellings Workstead Mixes Industrialism with Contemporary Embellishments By Kalin Ned | Published 2018-06-11 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rustic-modern-dwelling References: [dezeen](https://www.dezeen.com/2018/06/10/carriage-house-workstead-renovation-charleston-south-carolina/) & [workstead](https://www.workstead.com/) US design studio Workstead was tasked with updating a two-storey rustic modern dwelling that dates back to the 1800s. The home is located in Charleston, South Carolina and enjoys an intermixed aesthetic. While the walls of the living space entertain an industrial-like appearance, they are only accentuated by the randomized splatters of plaster and paint. Workstead focused on bringing the rustic modern dwelling to a more stylish and contemporary setting with "[earth-toned furnishings](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/texas-residence)" and "pale cypress and caned cabinetry." The sleek appearance of the furniture pieces is in direct juxtaposition with the house's [historic aesthetic](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/west-84th-street-brownstone). This creates an agreeable communication between old and new, ultimately making for a cozy and intimate interior.
