# Gruesome Sartirical Cartoons Russell Taysom Adds an Edge into Satirical Drawings By Sarah St.Jules | Published 2013-07-23 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/russell-taysom References: [juxtapoz](http://www.juxtapoz.com/illustration/works-by-russell-taysom) & [russelltaysom](http://www.russelltaysom.com/) [Cartoons](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tooncrafter-ai) are usually portrayed as fun, child-like depictions, however Russell Taysom takes a completely different spin on his drawings and makes them his own. Using [common figures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/san-diego-comiccon) such as a vulture or Hulk Hogan, Taysom takes an interesting approach to his work. Instead of using these things in normal situations, he does a play on the character's actions, making them comical. As an example, in the Hulk Hogan illustration, Hogan is replicating his famous shirt rip, except he is ripping off his own skin instead of his shirt. Even though these drawings have a [comical edge](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/garage-beer) to them, the technical skill behind Taysom cannot be questioned, which adds validity to his work. Russell Taysom is not afraid to go against the grain, and that is why his work stands out among the rest. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.6/10 - Popularity: 64% | Activity: 37% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 70% men, 30% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Satirical Cartoon Art:** The trend of using common figures in satirical drawings is disrupting the typical child-like depictions of cartoons. - **Dark Humor Art:** The trend of incorporating comical elements into gruesome or dark art is a disruptive innovation in the humor genre. - **Technical Art Skill:** The trend of showcasing technical art skill alongside satirical or comical elements is disrupting traditional art styles and elevating these mixed-genre artworks. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Art and Illustration:** Russell Taysom's unique approach to satirical illustrations has the potential to disrupt the traditional art and illustration industry. - **Humor and Comedy:** Taysom's use of dark humor in his illustrations presents a potentially disruptive innovation in the humor and comedy industry. - **Digital Media and Entertainment:** The rise of satire and dark humor in digital media and entertainment presents an opportunity for disruptive innovation in the industry, with a potential market for Taysom's work. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Striking Urban Wildlife Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/clare-allin.md) - [Celebratory Odd Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ridiculous-design.md) - [Illustrated Streetwear Capsules](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wasted-youth-x-tappei.md) - [Humorous Drink Cart Ads](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/titos-spokescart.md) - [Vibrantly Colorful Dynamic Artwork](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kayla-rumpp.md) - [Cheekily Creative Bookmarks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/illustrated-bookmarks.md) - [Boundary-Pushing Art Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/briony-douglas-1.md) - [Creative Frustration Outlets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/punch-your-client.md) - [Playful Modern Art Shows](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/brent-estabrook-debuts-storytime.md)
