# Transparent Disc Storage Units The Rotating-Glass Shelf by Nendo Boasts Atypical Doors By Meghan Young | Published 2013-05-31 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rotatingglass-shelf-by-nendo References: [design-milk](http://design-milk.com/rotating-disc-shelf-by-nendo/) & [dilmos](http://www.dilmos.com/exhibitions/salone2013.html) The Rotating-Glass Shelf by [Nendo](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/invisible-snow-globe) is a visually striking piece of furniture that is as different as they come. It boasts a set of transparent glass vinyl record-like discs that serve in place of traditional doors. Overlapping to create more opaque divisions, the discs add a whimsically artistic touch to the overall design that many will either love or hate. Part of the Japanese design studio's [Glassworks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/palo-santo-burner) exhibition held at the Dilmos Gallery in Milan, Italy, the Rotating-Glass Shelf by Nendo is definitely one of the more eye-catching designs showcased. Inspired by the “the historical practice of cutting sheet glass from glass discs," according to [Design Milk](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/draga-aurel1), the bubbles and depressions left of the surface not only provides better privacy, it also lends a handmade effect. They can be shifted via the holes in the middle. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.0/10 - Popularity: 8% | Activity: 15% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Transparent Furniture:** Opportunity to disrupt traditional furniture design through the use of transparent materials and unconventional doors. - **Vinyl Record-inspired Design:** Innovation opportunity to incorporate vinyl record-inspired design in furniture pieces or similar products. - **Handmade Effect Furniture:** Opportunity to create furniture that has a handmade effect, using design elements such as bubbles and depressions left on glass surfaces. ### Who This Affects Most - **Furniture Design:** The furniture industry can explore incorporating unconventional materials and creating pieces with whimsical designs like the Rotating-Glass Shelf by Nendo. - **Home Decor:** The home decor industry can incorporate design elements inspired by different eras, like vinyl records, to create unique products. - **Art and Design Exhibition:** Designers and artists can use historical practices, like cutting sheet glass from glass discs, to create unique pieces that can be showcased in art and design exhibitions. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Translucent Record Storage Units](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/aurala120a.md) - [Playful Rotating Cabinets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/giralot-rotating-storage.md) - [Abstract Jigsaw-Like Shelving](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spectator-shelf.md) - [Removable Plate Shelving Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/gere-multifunctional-crockery-shelf.md) - [Twisting Donut-Shaped Bookshelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hullabaloo-bookshelf.md) - [Dynamic Storage-Display Shelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shelf-life.md) - [Progressive Storage Shelving Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ledoux-prt-collection.md) - [Vinyl Record-Catering Furniture Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spin-collection.md) - [Mobile Illuminating Shelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/for-a-fleeting-moment.md)
