# Drum-Inspired Seating The Rope Stool by Minki Kim Was Modeled After Traditional Korean Instrument By Meghan Young | Published 2012-09-24 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rope-stool References: [yankodesign](http://www.yankodesign.com/2012/09/21/instrumental-inspiration/) The Rope Stool may be modeled after a musical instrument, but it does a good job of looking like a [piece of furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/loki-stool), albeit a unique one. Inspired by the janggu, the most widely used drum in Korean traditional music, the Rope Stool is held together by three ropes and a single dowel. Interestingly enough, it requires no other hardware or glue to keep it intact. Designed by Minki Kim, the Rope Stool may not have the [hourglass shape](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nick-beens) that the classic drum has, but it does feature a thin lip that recalls the top portion of the instrument. With the addition of the ropes, the stool is like a modernized version of the janggu, especially when it comes to color and materials. The Rope Stool will add much character in the home. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.0/10 - Popularity: 65% | Activity: 17% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Drum-inspired Furniture:** Create furniture that is inspired by traditional musical instruments. - **Minimal Hardware Designs:** Develop designs that require minimal hardware or glue to assemble and reduce waste. - **Unique Home Accents:** Expanding the market for unique home accents that incorporate traditional elements. ### Who This Affects Most - **Furniture Design:** Add unique cultural aspects in furniture design and sustainability practices. - **Home Decor:** Develop products that perfectly fit into homes and offer aesthetics and functionality - **Musical Instrument Design:** Combine furniture design and musical instruments to create innovative products. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Functional Decorative Rocking Stools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rool-stool.md) - [Rock Climbing-Inspired Stools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cling-stool.md) - [Minimal Wooden Webbed Stools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/knot-stool.md) - [Stone-Like Styrofoam Stools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kinold-styrofoam-stools.md) - [Interlocking Wooden Stools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-tie-stool.md) - [Cross Leg-Supported Stools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/euljiro.md) - [Chess-Inspired Stools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rook-stool.md) - [Bubble-Inspired Bulbous Stools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bubble-stool.md) - [Cultural Heritage-Inspired Stool Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/stool-design1.md)
