# Sliced Cylindrical Seating The Roll Chair Unfurls its Circular Contours into a Lovely Lumpy Couch By Amelia Roblin | Published 2014-01-22 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/roll-chair References: [designspotter](http://www.designspotter.com/product/2014/01/The-Roll.html) & [utzonkids](http://www.utzonkids.com/products/roll) The open and closed states of the Roll Chair are completely different; you might even see a pair side by side and not recognize that the two are the same. In its [compact arrangement](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/acordion-modular-sofa), the playful seating object takes the shape of a big cylindrical bolster, but separate its subtle seams and you end up with a [lumpy low lounger](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rokko). Two of the nearly semicircular cushions lie flat against the floor to become soft and spongy supports for your legs, your back and your rear end; meanwhile, the triangular core supports the third wool-covered cushion as a headrest. The [Utzon](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/can-lis) Kids Roll Chair makes for a great place to curl up with a book or from which to watch TV, conveniently reconfiguring to a tight shape when it isn't in use. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.6/10 - Popularity: 28% | Activity: 13% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Gen Alpha - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Modular Furniture:** Designing furniture that can transform into different shapes and sizes can create practical and space-saving solutions for small living areas. - **Sustainable Materials:** Using eco-friendly materials such as recycled fabrics or renewable materials like bamboo can make furniture more environmentally sustainable. - **Multi-functional Seating:** Combining different functions, such as a chair that can transform into a lounger, can appeal to consumers who value both practicality and comfort. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Furniture Design:** Innovative furniture design companies can explore creating modular furniture with sustainable materials and multifunctional seating. - **Interior Design:** Interior designers can suggest practical and space-saving solutions for clients with small living areas using modular furniture and multi-functional seating. - **Home Goods Retail:** Home goods retailers can target environmentally conscious and practical consumers by stocking sustainable and multifunctional furniture options. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Cinnamon Roll-Inspired Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bun-bun-chair.md) - [Adventurous Versatile Lounge Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flipster-seat.md) - [Colour Shift Clear Seating](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/color-roller.md) - [Circular Lounge Seats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/chunk-doughnut-chair.md) - [Chunky Cylindrical Lounge Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/umi-armchair.md) - [Multi-Position Beanbag Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/revolve-chair.md) - [Dynamic Furniture Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/moon-series.md) - [Flatpack Ultra-Modular Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nebula-chair.md) - [Rope-Like Dynamic Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/caterpillar-lounge.md)
