# Drawing Robots Kids Create Robotic Spirographs and Call Them Petbots By Katie Cordrey | Published 2010-06-28 | Life-Stages Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/robotic-spirographs References: [zedomax](http://zedomax.com/blog/2010/05/24/petbots-diy-drawing-robots-for-art/) & [makerfaire](http://makerfaire.com/pub/e/3182) The PetBots workshop for kids lets them build a working ArtBot from surplus and recycled motors and switches. A number of different devices can be created from the kits. However, some of the most fun are spinBots that use two markers as legs and a motor to spin robotic Spirographs to draw mathematical curves as they spin around in circles. The robotic Spirographs were part of the offerings at the San Francisco Maker Faire 2010. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.5/10 - Popularity: 49% | Activity: 79% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Life-Stages](https://www.trendhunter.com/life-stages) > [Youth](https://www.trendhunter.com/youth) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **DIY Robotics:** Allowing beginners to build simple working robots from surplus and recycled items creates an opportunity for the DIY Robotics trend. - **Educational Maker Workshops:** Maker workshops, like PetBots, are popping up to offer an educational and fun experience to kids looking to learn about STEM. - **Kinetic Art:** Robotic Spirographs offer a unique design opportunity for artists and designers interested in creating dynamic, kinetic art installations. ### Who This Affects Most - **Education:** The petbot and robotic spirographs workshops can be used in educational industries to teach children STEM. - **Art:** Robotic spirographs could be used by artists to create dynamic kinetic art installations, and could be an emerging trend in the art industry. - **DIY/ Maker Spaces:** DIY Robotics and maker spaces offer a source for kids and adults to learn new skills while creating fun and educational projects. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [DIY Robotics Toys](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/windbots.md) - [All-Ages Mini Robot Kits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/educational-robot-kit.md) - [Artistic AI Robots](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sketcher-x.md) - [Learning-Focused Robotics Toys](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/robots-in-motion.md) - [Programmable Robot Toys](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mini-robots.md) - [3-in-1 STEM Toys](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spiral-spring-science-kit.md) - [Reprogrammable Robot Companions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/quarky.md) - [Evolving Robot Dog Companions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/petoi-bittle-x.md) - [Educational Programmable Robots](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/robomaster-s1.md)
