# UFO-Inspired House Roberto Sanchez Rivera Built His Own Livable 'Spaceship' By Meghan Young | Published 2012-09-27 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/roberto-sanchez-rivera References: [mymodernmet](http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/roberto-sanchez-rivera-ufo-house) & [nytimes](http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/09/garden/a-spaceship-of-a-home-in-puerto-rico.html) There are unique and strange homes and then there is Roberto Sanchez Rivera's home. The retired industrial arts teacher bought land back in 2002 for $95,000 and since then has built a spectacular spaceship of a house for $150,000. Completely custom-made, his circular house resembles a [UFO](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ufo-lamborghini-furniture-pieces). Since it has been constructed in Puerto Rico, it is only appropriate that Roberto Sanchez Rivera's soundtrack blaring outside of the house (yes, there is a soundtrack) alternates between the theme music from Close Encounters of the Third Kind and salsa. Comprised of three bedrooms and two bathrooms, the interior of Roberto Sanchez Rivera also scream sci-fi. According to My Modern Met, the motivation behind Roberto Sanchez Rivera's house "is a 40-year-old heartbreak from Rivera's teen years that set this goal of creating [a home atop a hill](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/las-rocas) so magnificent that the girl who broke his heart would have no choice but to notice and return to him." ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.1/10 - Popularity: 72% | Activity: 72% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 70% men, 30% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: South America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Unique Homes:** Opportunity for architects and designers to create custom-made and unconventional living spaces. - **Sci-fi Inspired Design:** Potential for incorporating futuristic elements and themes into architectural and interior design. - **Emotional Architecture:** Opportunity to create homes that evoke specific emotions and tell personal stories through their design. ### Who This Affects Most - **Architecture:** Architects can explore unique and unconventional design concepts for residential projects. - **Interior Design:** Interior designers can incorporate sci-fi inspired elements into homes, creating immersive and futuristic living spaces. - **Real Estate:** Real estate developers can market and sell unique and emotionally-driven homes to appeal to niche markets. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Otherworldly Themed Rocking Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ufo-rocking.md) - [Doughnut-Shaped Elevated Houses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sinfornia-verde.md) - [Mountaintop Cantilevered Residences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/levitae-house.md) - [Martian-Informed Inflatable Buildings](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/martian-house.md) - [Shaded Modern Outdoor Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ufo-shelter.md) - [War Plane-Inspired Off-Grid Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/monocoque-cabin.md) - [Maximalist UFO Coffee Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flying-saucer-coffee-table.md) - [Sci-Fi Series-Inspired Rentable Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/byers-house.md) - [Futuristic Capsule House Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/capsule-house.md)
