Looking somewhere between a [chest of drawers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/otis-hanger-30) and a steampunk invention, Richard's Desk was crafted by the fine folk at [Restoration Hardware](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/byron-reeded-collection), who carefully aged the piece to give it that worn out, well-travelled look that's not present in new furniture. Those curious about Richard's Desk's peculiar name will be glad to know that Restoration Hardware provides a story detailing its origin. Apparently, the inspiration for this peculiar bureau was a [canvas-clad steamer trunk](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/malle-lit) which belonged to a man named Tom Richards, as identified by a brass plate mounted on the top of the trunk's latch. It's safe to assume Richards was a man of refined taste. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.1/10 - Popularity: 49% | Activity: 66% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/furniture) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Steampunk Furniture:** The trend of steampunk-inspired furniture like Richard's Desk provides opportunities for designers to create unique and stylish pieces that blend vintage and modern aesthetics. - **Aging Techniques:** The use of aging techniques on furniture creates a demand for pieces that look well-travelled or vintage, providing opportunities for furniture makers to experiment with new finishes and distressing methods. - **Personalized Furniture:** Pieces like Richard's Desk that are inspired by a specific story or person's style provide opportunities for furniture makers to create personalized and meaningful pieces for customers. ### Where This Applies - **Furniture Manufacturing:** Furniture manufacturers can capitalize on the trend of steampunk-inspired furniture and aging techniques to create unique and desirable pieces. - **Interior Design:** Interior designers can incorporate steampunk-inspired furniture and personalized pieces like Richard's Desk to create one-of-a-kind living spaces for clients. - **Retail:** Retailers can offer aging services or aging products to meet the growing demand for vintage-looking furniture pieces like Richard's Desk. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Futuristic Sculptural Desks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/arnardo-desk.md) - [Travel Trunk-Inspired Shelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/louis-vuitton-cabinet-of-curiosities-by-marc-newson.md) - [Ergonomic Multi-Use Desk Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kabinett-desk.md) - [Pocket Storage-Equipped Workstations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pocket-desk.md) - [Charming Timber Workstation Desks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/adudu-desk.md) - [Floating Architectural Desk Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/1949-protractor-desk.md) - [Sleek Storage-Packed Workstations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/threesix-desk.md) - [Fold-Out WFH Desks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/writing-bureau.md) - [Minimalist Storage-Paired Workstations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/diag-desk.md)
