# Looping Timber Pavilions The Ribbon Folly is a Delightful Fixture in the Contemporary Cityscape By Amelia Roblin | Published 2012-05-28 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ribbon-folly References: [suckerpunchdaily](http://www.suckerpunchdaily.com/2012/05/02/ribbon-folly/) The atmosphere of many outdoor spaces is much improved with the existence of a small amount of shelter. The Ribbon Folly provides this in a whimsical way that references historical architecture and celebrates timeless organic forms. Much like the [old English folly](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/forum-des-vestiges), this structure asserts itself amidst its grassy landscape as an eye-catching interruption and a fanciful refuge. Different, however is the language in which it manifests itself, not in a revived classical style, but rather in a [fluid and nature-mimicking form](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pasona-natureverse-pavilion). Situated in an urban park and hence surrounded in buildings, this abstract style is much better suited than one of heavy stone and teetering towers. [Long strands of rich pliant wood](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/match-house) have been looped and curled into the expressive bench and canopy that is Ribbon Folly by Virginia Melnyk. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.2/10 - Popularity: 32% | Activity: 27% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Gen Alpha, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Architecture](https://www.trendhunter.com/architecture) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Whimsical Outdoor Structures:** The Ribbon Folly showcases the trend of creating eye-catching and fanciful outdoor structures. - **Fluid and Nature-inspired Design:** The fluid and nature-mimicking design of the Ribbon Folly reflects the trend of incorporating organic forms into architectural creations. - **Contemporary Interpretation of Historical Architecture:** The Ribbon Folly represents the trend of reinterpreting historical architectural styles in a modern and abstract way. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Architecture and Design:** The architecture and design industry can explore innovative ways to create whimsical and nature-inspired outdoor structures. - **Urban Planning:** Urban planners can incorporate contemporary interpretations of historical architecture into public spaces to enhance their appeal. - **Furniture and Home Decor:** The furniture and home decor industry can draw inspiration from the fluid and nature-mimicking design of the Ribbon Folly to create unique and organic pieces. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Follie-Inspired Boat-Shaped Annexes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/folly-fair-hill.md) - [Bold Performance Pavilion Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/what-goes-around-bandstand.md) - [Light Filtered Glulam Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/paviljong-rosendal.md) - [Tranquil Round Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-round-pavilion.md) - [Interactive Architectural Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/folding-landscape.md) - [Timber Modern Porch Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/porch-an-architecture-of-generosity.md) - [Ring-Shaped Forest Blenches](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nesting-loops.md) - [Community Hub Timber Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/craft-not-carbon.md) - [Cantilevered Porous Steel Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/baker-creek-pavilion.md)
