# Shipping Container Abodes A Residence in Northern Ireland was Constructed with Unusual Materials By Vasiliki Marapas | Published 2015-01-17 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/residence-in-northern-ireland References: [dezeen](http://www.dezeen.com/2015/01/11/grillagh-water-house-patrick-bradley-maghera-northern-ireland-farm-shipping-containers-grand-designs/) & [pb-architects](http://www.pb-architects.com/) Architect Patrick Bradley designed the 'Grillagh Water House:' a residence in Northern Ireland that was built with [used shipping containers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/custom-container-living-nook). More specifically, the house is built on Bradley's farmland, near the town Maghera. Bradley decided to construct the home with shipping containers, an unusual choice, because it was only way to erect his design without going over his budget. Bradley acquired the containers in Bangor and transported them to his land, where they were assembled around a [steel framework](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/house-xo). Two metal boxes protrude from atop the other two containers. The upper level is cantilevered so as to provide a gorgeous balcony, which is enveloped in a protective [layer of steel fins](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bomun-house), preventing excess solar beams from entering and heating the interior. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.5/10 - Popularity: 94% | Activity: 92% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Shipping Container Homes:** There is a growing trend in using shipping containers as a sustainable and budget-friendly alternative for building homes. - **Off-grid Living:** The use of shipping containers in residential construction opens up opportunities for off-grid living and self-sufficiency. - **Creative Architecture:** Shipping container homes showcase the trend of using unconventional materials and designs in architecture. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Residential Construction:** The residential construction industry can explore using shipping containers to create affordable and eco-friendly housing options. - **Home Design and Decor:** The home design and decor industry can adapt to the rise of shipping container homes by offering specialized products and services. - **Sustainable Architecture:** Sustainable architects and builders can incorporate shipping containers into their projects to promote sustainability and reduce construction waste. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Triple Shipping Container Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/modhouse-tiny-home.md) - [Shipping Container-Built Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kennedy-model.md) - [Versatile Compact Modern Residences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/augustine-tiny-home.md) - [Shipping Container Tiny Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rising-sun.md) - [Recycling-Centric Waterfront Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shor-house.md) - [Miniature Insulated Home Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ark-tiny-homes.md) - [Corrugated Metal Barn-Like Houses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/studioac.md) - [Cost-Effective Shipping Container Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/custom-container-living-nook.md) - [Pink-Hued Shipping Container Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pink-shipping-container-homes.md)
