# Ascending Attic Staircases This Renovated Attic is Accessed by a Steel Staircase By Vasiliki Marapas | Published 2014-07-30 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/renovated-attic References: [dezeen](http://www.dezeen.com/2014/07/29/five-am-isle-of-water-house-extension-interior-staircase/) & [fiveam.be](http://www.fiveam.be/) Design studio Five AM completed a [renovated attic design](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/brick-to-light) for a house in Belgium. Entry to the attic is provided by a [delicate metal staircase](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cobalt-coach-house). The thin staircase excludes the first riser and turns a corner to ascend along the wall. At the top, a rectangular space sits underneath the pitched mansard roof. Sleeping accommodations are located at the opposite end. The project earns its name, 'Isle of Water,' through the solidly-surfaced box which houses a bathroom. The box's walls stop short before the ceiling, allowing the inhabitants privacy without segregating the room. The architects explain, "As the owner wanted an open and airy feeling, we designed a [monolithic white box](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/minimalist-cocoon) that doesn't reach the ceiling. The height delivers the privacy when needed, but makes it still possible to interact with each other." ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.8/10 - Popularity: 58% | Activity: 18% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Metal Staircase Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Develop lightweight and visually appealing metal staircase designs for compact living spaces. - **Innovative Attic Renovations:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Create unique and functional attic renovations that maximize space and integrate modern design elements. - **Open and Airy Interior Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Invent innovative interior design solutions that create open and airy spaces without sacrificing privacy. ### Who This Affects Most - **Architecture and Interior Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Incorporate cutting-edge design concepts and materials into architectural and interior design projects to create visually striking and functional spaces. - **Home Renovation:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Develop efficient and cost-effective solutions for renovating attics and other underutilized spaces in residential properties. - **Furniture and Fixtures:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Design space-saving and multi-functional furniture and fixtures that enhance the functionality and aesthetics of renovated spaces, such as attic bedrooms and bathrooms. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Bold Architectural Renovations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flat-iron-house.md) - [Sculptural Townhome Staircases](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/atelier-pierre-thibault-1.md) - [Elevated Garden Lofts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/attic-above-garden.md) - [Dutch Barn Spiralled Staircase](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/julia-van-beuningen.md) - [Bright Attic Sanctuaries](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/foksal.md) - [Light-Filled Alpine Lofts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/omarama-attic.md) - [Renovated Compact Loft Apartments](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vessel-project.md) - [Timbered Passage Stair Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wooden-annex.md) - [Remodelled Staircase-Centric Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cobalt-coach-house.md)
