While the Red Bowl art installation is quite stunning in its measured simplicity, a somber element is present due to the inspiration behind the piece. It pays tribute to the lepers in medieval times, many of whom were treated at the Maladrerie Saint-Lazare in Beauvais, France, where the Red Bowl art installation was constructed.

Designed by Andy Cao and Xavier Perrot, the co-founders of Cao | Perrot Studio, a bicontinental creative studio based in Los Angeles and Paris, the Red Bowl art installation is made up of 5,000 black rods that are adorned with [red glass domes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tip-top-glass). Ranging in heights, the metallic pillars form the shape of a bowl, hence its name.

The significance of the Red Bowl art installation is the fact that lepers would take a literal blood bath in hopes it would cure their disease.
