# Repurposed Computer Storage The Rebirth Magazine Rack Gives a Second Life to E-Waste for Print By Amelia Roblin | Published 2013-01-24 | Eco Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rebirth-magazine-rack References: [yankodesign](http://www.yankodesign.com/2013/01/23/where-did-the-monitor-go/) & [red-dot.sg](http://www.red-dot.sg/en) It's a little bit ironic that a piece of fairly modern technology should be demoted to perform the basic low-tech task of holding a photos and text that are not digital. The Rebirth Magazine Rack is a [hollowed out computer monitor](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/computer-2) of the [old bulky CRT (cathode-ray-tube) variety](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/minitoo-retro-pc-style) that's been converted into an empty shell so that it functions as a cubby. Low Yi Siu's design won a 2012 Red Dot Design Award for its clever reinterpretation of an existing object and its success in finding a way to make use of one of a multitude of [discarded machine components](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tech-take-back-box). This particular plastic piece was mounted on four wooden legs with a significant tilt so that the resultant Rebirth Magazine Rack can stash stacks of documents, mail, books and other reading materials. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.1/10 - Popularity: 41% | Activity: 45% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Eco](https://www.trendhunter.com/eco) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Repurposed Technology:** Opportunity to repurpose old technology components into new functional items. - **E-waste Upcycling:** Innovative ways to transform electronic waste into useful products. - **Sustainable Design:** Designing products that help reduce waste and promote environmental consciousness. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Furniture Manufacturing:** Potential for incorporating repurposed technology components into furniture designs. - **Recycling and Waste Management:** Opportunity to explore e-waste upcycling processes and solutions. - **Interior Design and Home Decor:** Incorporating sustainable design principles into interior design concepts and products. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Single-Piece Wooden Magazine Racks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/skola.md) - [Tubular Literature Storage Racks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/interspace-magazine-rack.md) - [Electronic Packaging-Made Stools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/edgar-stool.md) - [Retro-Inspired 3D-Printed Storage](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/macintosh-studio.md) - [Recycled Desk Trays](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tray210.md) - [Modernized Old-Fashioned Side Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/union-side-table.md) - [Book-Storing Side Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bookgroove-bookrack.md) - [Resurrected Used Smartphones](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/project-afterlife.md) - [Modular Recycled Power Strips](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bfriends-power-module.md)
