# Stop-Motion Movie Art These Rankin Bass Hobbit Stills are Fun and Nostalgic By Angela Rajic | Published 2013-12-19 | Pop Culture Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rankin-bass-hobbit1 References: [mightymega](http://mightymega.com/2013/12/16/the-hobbit-in-the-world-of-rankin-bass/) & [minionfactory.blogspot](http://minionfactory.blogspot.co.uk/) During the Christmas season, we get healthy doses of our favorite Rankin-Bass [stop-motion animations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/over-the-garden-wall) like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and The Little Drummer Boy, and one artist has taken inspiration from them and created Rankin-Bass Hobbit tableaux. Artist Phil Postma took the Rankin-Bass puppets and redesigned and staged them into [scenes from the recent Hobbit films](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lego-diorama), the same tactic he used to recreate scenes from the [Star Wars franchise](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/gingerbread-atat-walker). The Puppet playing Gandalf the wizard for example, is a redressed puppet of the Winter Warlock from Santa Claus is Coming to Town. The results are accurate pieces of Rankin-Bass Hobbit art that also provide a few laughs and a good deal of nostalgia to viewers who are familiar with the old Rankin-Bass cartoons and recognize the puppets being used. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.8/10 - Popularity: 33% | Activity: 43% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Pop Culture](https://www.trendhunter.com/popculture) > [Media](https://www.trendhunter.com/media) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Rankin-bass Revival:** Opportunity for artists to reimagine and recreate scenes from classic Rankin-Bass animations in innovative and entertaining ways. - **Cross-franchise Crossovers:** Emerging trend of blending puppets and characters from different franchises to create unique and nostalgic art pieces. - **Nostalgic Mashups:** Growing demand for art that combines elements from different nostalgic sources, creating a sense of familiarity and novelty. ### Where This Applies - **Art and Design:** Artists have an opportunity to tap into the nostalgic appeal of Rankin-Bass animations and create innovative and nostalgic artworks. - **Entertainment:** Cross-franchise crossovers can offer exciting new possibilities for collaborations and merchandise tie-ins, attracting fans from multiple franchises. - **Animation and Film:** Opportunity to explore the potential of combining stop-motion animation techniques from different franchises, creating unique and visually stunning films. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Festive Brick Toy Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/whoville-moc.md) - [Fantasy Series Building Blocks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-shire-set.md) - [Comedic Christmas Parodies](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/reinfell-ad.md) - [Festive Elvish Candles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/elf-x-homesick.md) - [Festive Americana Artwork Decor](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/norman-rockwell-for-pottery-barn.md) - [Sci-Fi-Inspired Classical Posters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sen-donnan.md) - [Exclusive Movie-Inspired Collectibles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/guillermo-del-toros-pinocchio.md) - [Festive Brick Snowglobes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lego-snow-globes.md) - [Fantasy-Inspired LEGO Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-lord-of-the-rings-lego-set.md)
