# Random Shelving by MDF Italia By Design Crack | Published 2007-02-18 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/random-shelving-by-mdf-italia References: [designcrack](http://designcrack.com/v2/2007/02/08/random-shelving-by-mdf-italia/) & [mdfitalia.it](http://www.mdfitalia.it) I wish I could express the beautiful patterns this [shelving system](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/original-modern-shelving) makes when the owner puts his or her books onto this shelf. At first glance, you might be saying, “OK. It's shelves:NEXT.” But wait. [MDF Italia](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/press-chair) has made a couple of subtle design maneuvers that make all the difference in the world. First, the shelves are quite tall. Their height help create a sort of second wall, a field of shelves, that is necessary to dematerialize the furniture. Second the shelves are very thin and white. The white edges and background give a base that let the books pop out from the shelves giving the books a perfect frame. And finally, the random pattern of the individual shelf heights creates a rhythm (almost musical composition) with the books. I'm ordering these immediately: after I get rich and move into my modernist dream home. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 0.7/10 - Popularity: 1% | Activity: 12% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 70% men, 30% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Heightened Shelving:** MDF Italia's tall shelving system creates a second wall and new space for design in the home. - **Minimalist Design:** The thin, white shelves provide a minimalist design for book storage and provoke a new wave of minimalism in home decor. - **Random Pattern Composition:** Random shelving design allows for unique, artistic patterns in home storage that can help de-materialize furniture. ### Where This Applies - **Home Decor:** MDF Italia's unique shelving system design provides an opportunity for innovation in storage and minimalistic design for homes and apartments. - **Furniture:** With the growth of minimalist home decor trends, furniture manufacturers can innovate with thin, space-saving designs that can help homeowners save space. - **Interior Design:** Random patterns in interior design, particularly in shelving, creates opportunities for designers to create new, unique spaces in the home. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Room-Dividing Bookshelf Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/frquence-shelf.md) - [Abstract Jigsaw-Like Shelving](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spectator-shelf.md) - [Dynamic Architecturally Strong Bookshelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dogma.md) - [Modern Convertible Shelving Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/blendend.md) - [Modular Configuration Shelving Units](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/repisa-01.md) - [Modular Contemporary Shelving Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/qurv.md) - [Adaptable Flat-Pack Shelving](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flat-pack-shelving.md) - [Mobile Illuminating Shelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/for-a-fleeting-moment.md) - [Dynamic Storage-Display Shelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shelf-life.md)
