# Lightening Speed GPUs AMD Announces the Radeon HD 6990M Graphics Processor By Omar Yusuf | Published 2011-07-13 | Tech Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/radeon-hd-6990m References: [gizmodo](http://gizmodo.com/5820373/amd-claims-the-radeon-hd-6990m-is-the-fastest-consumer-gpu) & [hardwarecanucks](http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/41404-amd-radeon-hd-6990-4gb-review.html) Graphical processing units (GPUs) are the raw materials required to produce the computer-generated magic we see in video games and in films every year, which is what makes [AMD's](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ryzen-7-5800x3d) assertion that their '[Radeon](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rx-7900-gre) HD 6990M' is the fastest GPU ever so important. This announcement appears just weeks after [Nvidia](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/radeon-rx-7800m) -- AMD's only major competitor -- claimed to have the industry's fastest graphics card, the GTX 580. Although it appears that AMD is leading in the race toward perfect photorealism, the market is fickle and likely to change. For the curious, the HD 6990M has approximately 1.7 billion transistors within its curiously small case and has the ability to produce almost picture-perfect simulations of real life. In fact, AMD's video card outperformed its Nvidia competitor by 20% in controlled tests. Although it won't see widespread adoption until prices fall later in the year, this GPU is an indication of the strides the film and gaming industries have taken toward higher fidelity in the CG world. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.7/10 - Popularity: 7% | Activity: 36% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 90% men, 10% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Tech](https://www.trendhunter.com/tech) > [Multimedia](https://www.trendhunter.com/multimedia) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Fast GPU Race:** The competition between GPU manufacturers is pushing for faster and more powerful graphics processing units. - **Improved Photorealism:** The development of faster and more capable GPUs is driving advancements in photorealistic rendering for gaming and film industries. - **Higher Fidelity in CG:** The advancements in GPU technology are leading to higher fidelity in computer-generated graphics for gaming and film industries. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Gaming:** The gaming industry can capitalize on the competitive developments in graphics processing technology to create more immersive and visually stunning games. - **Film:** The film industry can leverage these faster and more capable GPUs to produce more visually stunning and realistic special effects and CG animations. - **Computer Hardware:** The development of faster and more capable GPUs is driving innovations in computer hardware design and manufacturing. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Mobile Gaming Graphics Cards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/radeon-rx-7800m.md) - [Dedicated Mobile GPUs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/immortalis-g715.md) - [Riproaring Gaming GPUs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/gaming-gpu.md) - [High-Powered Gaming Processors](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ryzen-7-5800x3d.md) - [Flagship Triple-Fan GPUs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/aorus-geforce-rtx-4090.md) - [Ultra High Workload-Ready GPUs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/xtx-phoenix-nirvana.md) - [Chromatic Graphics Cards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sakura-7900xtx.md) - [China Market-Focused GPUs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rx-7900-gre.md) - [High-End Workstation GPUs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rtx-6000.md)
