# Spiky Flower Holders The Prosthetic Vase by Shay Shafranek Actively Keeps Plants Alive By Meghan Young | Published 2012-06-29 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/prosthetic-vase References: [fastcodesign](http://www.fastcodesign.com/1670146/a-vase-that-serves-as-a-root-system-for-flowers) & [shayshafranek](http://www.shayshafranek.com/index.php?/vases/prosthetic-vase/) The Prosthetic Vase offers a new perspective of the [traditional flower holder](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kinetic-vases). Shay Shafranek, the Israeli designer behind the creation, dramatically observes, "An average 21st-century human wishes to bring nature into the home environment. He cuts it from its life source, sentencing it to death and puts it in a special coffin, a preserving vessel in which the flower will slowly but surely wither and die.” Inspired to make a change, he dreamed up the Prosthetic Vase. Equipped with [glass capillary-like tubes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/navazi), the Prosthetic Vase provides artificial roots that help to actively keep the flower alive rather than letting it slowly rot away. A complex creation, a few prototypes were created to try to perfect the process. Nevertheless, Shafranek notes, "The concept of this specific vase is not its functionality but the story it tells." ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.2/10 - Popularity: 16% | Activity: 11% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Artificial Root Systems:** Designing flower holders with artificial root systems presents disruptive innovation opportunities by providing a solution for keeping flowers alive longer. - **Nature-inspired Designs:** Exploring nature-inspired designs in flower holders can disrupt traditional vase designs and create unique and functional products. - **Sustainable Flower Preservation:** Developing flower holders that actively preserve and sustain the life of flowers can disrupt the traditional practice of flowers slowly withering and dying in vases. ### Where This Applies - **Home Decor:** The home decor industry can embrace the trend of artificial root systems in flower holders to offer innovative and sustainable products for consumers. - **Design and Manufacturing:** The design and manufacturing industry has an opportunity to explore nature-inspired designs in flower holders and create visually appealing yet functional products. - **Floristry:** The floristry industry can benefit from the trend of sustainable flower preservation by offering flower holders that extend the lifespan of floral arrangements and bouquets. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Minimalist Illusory Vases](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vaso-gota-vase.md) - [Self-Cleansing Antimicrobial Vases](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/potr-letterbox.md) - [Floating Stem Vases](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lotus-effect-vase.md) - [Chandelier-Shaped Self-Watering Vases](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/selfwatering-vase.md) - [Speaker-Equipped Flower Vases](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/blooming-product.md) - [Eco Abstract Vase Covers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/leather-vase.md) - [Personalized Floral Grid Vases](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/grid-vase.md) - [Copper Tubular Minimal Vases](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hiroyuki-yuasa.md) - [Futuristic Self-Watering Planters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-klaustrafloria.md)
