The “Grass Mud Horse” video is one of a handful of prank videos that originated on a Chinese equivalent to Wikipedia called [Baidu Baike](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/xirang). The series of videos documents fictional creatures whose names purposely sound like profane words in Chinese. Although giggle-worthy, these videos are a direct response to the [strict censorship in China](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/censorfy) which enforces very intense keyword filtering on the Internet. The Grass Mud Horse attempts to limit citizen access to “all profanity and access to sensitive topics” according to Know Your Meme. Who would have thought a Grass Mud Horse would be the emblem of Chinese’s People’s freedom of speech? ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.2/10 - Popularity: 10% | Activity: 79% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 90% men, 10% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Pop Culture](https://www.trendhunter.com/popculture) > [Media](https://www.trendhunter.com/media) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Prank Videos for Political Activism:** Using humorous prank videos to communicate political messages and subvert censorship. - **Creative Strategies for Circumventing Censorship:** Finding creative ways to get around strict censorship laws and promote free speech. - **Internet Memes as Symbols of Resistance:** Transforming internet memes into symbols of resistance in the fight for freedom of expression. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Social Media:** Using social media platforms to share humorous and politically-charged videos that promote free speech. - **Content Creation:** Creating content across various mediums such as video, music, and art to subvert censorship. - **Activism:** Using humor and creativity in activism for social and political change in the face of government censorship. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Creative Protest Archives](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pocket-protests.md) - [Haunting Tech Safety PSAs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/centre-for-child-protection.md) - [Cheeky Family-Friendly Swearing Campaigns](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/youll-swear-by-them.md) - [Ocean Purity Petitons](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-dirty-protest.md) - [Horse-Inspired Menus](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pf-changs-lunar-new-year.md) - [Horse-Supporting NFTs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/horse-nfts.md) - [Festive Lunar Menus](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dark-horse-menu.md) - [Lunar New Year Capsules](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/year-of-the-horse-1.md) - [Humorous Profanity Candles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fuck-this-candle.md)
