# Industrial Landmark Stadiums The Powerhouse Stadium Blends Heritage with Contemporary Engineering By Amy Duong | Published 2025-11-22 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/powerhouse References: [heatherwick](http://heatherwick.com/) The Powerhouse Birmingham City stadium blends heritage with contemporary engineering by wrapping its 62,000-seat bowl in twelve chimney-like towers that reference the region’s brick-making past. The form creates a strong identity for the [new Sports Quarter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sardar-vallabhbhai-patel-sports) while integrating a [retractable roof](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-kansas-city-chiefs) and a [movable pitch](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/manchester-united-3) that allow the venue to host football, concerts and civic events. The stands are steeply arranged to keep supporters close to the field, enhancing atmosphere and maintaining a compact visual profile. At ground level, open plazas and public routes connect the site to surrounding neighbourhoods, supporting everyday activity rather than isolating the structure for match days only. The design positions the Powerhouse as both a landmark and a community anchor. Material selections, circulation routes and public spaces all reinforce ties to the local context while projecting a forward-looking image for East Birmingham. The result is a versatile stadium rooted in place and built to serve multiple roles within the city’s cultural ecosystem.
