# Skewed Seating Systems The Portrait in Chair Embodies a Slanted Assembly of Contact Components By Amelia Roblin | Published 2014-02-19 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/portrait-in-chair References: [akiohayakawa.jp](http://www.akiohayakawa.jp/project/portraitinchair/en.html) While the frame of the Portrait in Chair looks rather standard, the two parts that are intended to come in direct contact with the sitter's body have been installed in an unusual way. The [wooden components](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pere-chair) that make up the rear support structure have been altered slightly to accommodate the crooked placement of the backrest. This shift in angle is complemented by the askew positioning of the squared seat panel so that the [task chair](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dynamic-spinecare) becomes whimsically asymmetrical. You might think about sitting upon this perch with your spine aligned forwards, yet the object actually encourages you to rest slightly sideways. A fan of Akio Hayakawa's piece will also appreciate the Portrait in Chair series that comprises the [adjoined assembly of seats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hybla-seating-system) to form idiosyncratic benches. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.6/10 - Popularity: 57% | Activity: 13% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Asymmetrical Seating:** Exploring seating designs that challenge traditional symmetrical forms, creating unique ergonomic opportunities. - **Altered Ergonomics:** Intentionally modifying the placement and angle of seating components to optimize user comfort and posture. - **Whimsical Furniture:** Incorporating playful and unexpected design elements into furniture pieces, creating a unique visual experience. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Furniture Design:** Pushing the boundaries of traditional furniture design to create innovative pieces that challenge conventional norms. - **Interior Design:** Incorporating unique and visually compelling furniture into interior design to create distinctive spaces. - **Ergonomic Technology:** Developing innovative ergonomic technology and solutions for improved comfort and health in workplace settings. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Cross Legged Chair Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sway-chair.md) - [Sleek Posture-Correcting Seats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ayur-chair-1.md) - [Anatomical Lounge Seating](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/himalaya-pelvis-chair.md) - [Artfully Balanced Chair Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/halfway-serious.md) - [Shapeshifting Spine-Like Work Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spine-chair.md) - [Suspenseful Statement Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/edgeofyr.md) - [Pretzel-Like Comfortable Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dohui.md) - [Chaotically Natural Seating Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kkochgalam-chair.md) - [Simplistically Shaped Geometric Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sitter-chair.md)
