# Asian Ceramic Furniture Porcelain Chairs by Sam Durant are Inspired by Classic Plastic Seats By Meghan Young | Published 2012-09-23 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/porcelain-chairs-by-sam-durant References: [fastcodesign](http://www.fastcodesign.com/1670814/an-american-backyard-icon-becomes-a-monument-to-chinese-craft) & [samdurant](http://www.samdurant.com/) The Porcelain Chairs by Sam Durant, a designer based in Los Angeles, may seem a little deceiving at first. This is because they happen to look just like the [common plastic chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/patan-chair) often dotting American lawns in the summer. Of course, they were inspired by those very same chairs. Yet instead of focusing on their purely practical existence, this furniture series has elevated them in the design sphere. Created after being invited to a sculpture event in China that was unceremoniously canceled, the Porcelain Chairs by Sam Durant were crafted in collaboration with Chinese craftsmen at the Jiao Zhi studio in Xiamen. Comprised of [colorful, one-off creations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/no-two-alike), the collection is striking. Durant writes, "I have always found them fascinating. A great combination of utility and economy." ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.0/10 - Popularity: 79% | Activity: 33% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Porcelain Furniture:** Designers are elevating practical porcelain pieces into stunning furniture designs. - **Traditional Design Inspiration:** Designers are finding inspiration in traditionally designed pieces, and creating modern-day interpretations. - **Cultural Collaboration:** Collaborating with artisans from different cultures has resulted in unique and striking creations. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Furniture Design:** Innovative new designs are transforming traditional furniture pieces into unique and striking creations. - **Ceramics:** Ceramic producers and artisans can expand their offerings by collaborating with designers to create new porcelain furniture pieces. - **Artisanal Craftsmanship:** Artisanal craft industries can diversify their offerings through collaboration with designers, resulting in unique and profitable creations. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Waste-Incorporated Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/knoll-chairs.md) - [Cast Fiberglass Dining Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/samba-dining-chair.md) - [Wood-Inspired Patterned Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dino-chair.md) - [Durable Designer Outdoor Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/breeo-x-series-chair.md) - [Monumental Ceramic Furniture Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/series-no-ii.md) - [Seashell-Inspired Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/traditional-and-digital-techniques.md) - [Origami-Inspired Porcelain Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/saori-matsushita.md) - [Asian Watercraft-Inspired Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sampan.md) - [Kitchen-Inspired Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-pole-collection.md)
