There is a Pope Benedict XVI Twitter account. The highest official in the Roman Catholic Church recently joined the micro-blogging site (@pontifex), although his first tweet won't be sent out until the 12th of December. It's no surprise that Pope Benedict XVI is on Twitter. Many of the Catholic Church's followers are youth who get their information from social media as opposed to the TV or radio.

The Pope Benedict XVI Twitter account has been active for just about a day and already has 286,315 followers and counting. The Pope is following seven people, but don't get excited and think that Benedict XVI might follow you come Friday. The seven people the Pope is following are actually duplicate Pontiff accounts created by the Vatican to tweet in other languages. The Vatican is asking everyone to tweet questions to the Pope under the hashtag #askpontifex (pontifex is Latin for bridge builder).
