# Illusory Origami Illuminators Pop Up Lighting Expresses its Inner Animal Once Switched On By Amelia Roblin | Published 2013-01-29 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pop-up-lighting References: [notcot.org](http://www.notcot.org/post/52372/) & [1designperday](http://www.1designperday.com/2013/01/27/pop-up-lighting-by-chen-bikovski/) Most light fixtures embody little to no mystery. Chandeliers reveal that sparkle effect once they're turned on, but few lamps offer the delightful surprise that Pop Up Lighting does. The three pieces might look like examples of mere [origami](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flatpack-timber-lamp), but they have a great deal more character that just isn't exposed until they've been allowed to illuminate dark rooms. Each of the [folded paper lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/farolito) has an integrated tab that was inspired by old [interactive children's books](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tap-tap-table-lamp) from thirty-odd years ago. Pull this tag gently and another feature of the piece will emerge. The deer gains ears, the owl spreads its wings and the peacock changes the shape of its tail. When Chen Bikovski's Pop Up Lighting is switched on, the stag acquires antlers, the owl opens its eyes and the peacock flaunts its feathers. These particular features are created by the light that escapes slits in the creased material. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.6/10 - Popularity: 86% | Activity: 74% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Gen Alpha - Top markets: Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Interactive Lighting:** Chen Bikovski's Pop Up Lighting offers a unique interactive experience that combines lighting and origami designs. - **Surprise Element in Design:** Pop Up Lighting surprises users with hidden features that are only revealed once the lamps are turned on. - **Inspiration From Children's Books:** The integrated tab in the lamps is inspired by interactive children's books, adding a nostalgic touch to the design. ### Where This Applies - **Interior Design:** The interactive and surprising nature of Pop Up Lighting can enhance interior design, creating an engaging and unique lighting experience for customers. - **Home Decor:** Pop Up Lighting can add a touch of whimsy to home decor, appealing to customers looking for unique and visually stunning lighting options. - **Lighting Design:** The hidden features and origami-inspired design of Pop Up Lighting offer exciting opportunities for innovation in the lighting design industry. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Blooming Lighting Fixtures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pavo.md) - [Flat-Pack Paper Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tsubomi.md) - [Foldable Wooden Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/interactive-folding-lamp.md) - [Paper Sheath Lighting Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sorpresa.md) - [Origami-Inspired Lit Table Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lightup.md) - [Origami-Inspired Floor Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ori-lamp.md) - [Traditional Tower-Inspired Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-pagoda-lamp.md) - [Blooming Paper Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kazuhiro-yamanaka-tsubomi-lamp.md) - [Folded Timber Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flatpack-timber-lamp.md)
