# Playful Slotted Carpetscapes Pocket Rug Lets You Stash Toys and Create Unique Settings for Games By Amelia Roblin | Published 2015-02-12 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pocket-rug References: [red-dot.sg](http://www.red-dot.sg/en/online-exhibition/concept/?code=1149&y=2014&c=10&a=0) The creators of this pocket rug suggest that a carpet shouldn't be something that you simply play on, but rather a surface that you can play in. The recipient of an honorable mention at the 2014 Red Dot Design Awards, this dynamic floor covering affords a fun way to organize toys and to set up an elaborate interior landscape that can enhance the experience of playtime. A team of designers from Huaqiao University's design and engineering programs has devised a [rectangular area rug](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/softblock-rug) that's lined with three rows of five slits. These lengthy openings can be pulled up like flaps, enabling children to slip things inside. The most functional aspect of the [Gap](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-hailey-jean) Carpet, however, is the possibility of [pushing pillows and cushions through](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/resten). This greatly enhances the comfort of kids who would otherwise be seated on harder surfaces. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.1/10 - Popularity: 75% | Activity: 39% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Gen Alpha - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Interactive Carpets:** Designing carpets with interactive elements like slits and flaps to enhance playtime experiences. - **Organizational Play:** Creating products that not only facilitate play but also provide storage solutions for toys and other items. - **Multi-functional Design:** Developing products like the Gap Carpet that serve multiple purposes, such as providing comfort and storage options. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Children's Furniture and Decor:** Incorporating interactive carpets and storage solutions into children's room decor and furniture. - **Playroom Design:** Integrating multi-functional design elements like the Gap Carpet into playroom setups and layouts. - **Toy Manufacturing:** Partnering with designers to create toys that can be easily stored and organized using interactive carpets. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Desert-Inspired Floor Coverings](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dune-rug.md) - [Dynamic Flatwoven Carpet Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/matter-colection.md) - [Playful Modular Kids Sofas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/twiny-sofa-system.md) - [Sustainable Sensorial Play Pads](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/stokke-playpad.md) - [Kid-Envisioned Urban Environments](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-little-big-playmat.md) - [Exquisite Textured Rug Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/textured-rug.md) - [Playful Textile Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kvadrat-raf-simons.md) - [Sandbox-Like Modular Storage Cabinets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/modular-storage-cabinet1.md) - [Sculptural Seating Carpets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rondin.md)
