# Eccentrically Artistic Lighting Plate Life by Dean Brown is an Avant-Garde Lamp By Meghan Young | Published 2012-08-14 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/plate-life References: [itsnicethat](http://www.itsnicethat.com/articles/dean-brown) & [mrdeanbrown](http://www.mrdeanbrown.co.uk/) When it comes to furniture, Dean Brown, an industrial designer based in Italy, injects a dose of creativity that results in creations like Plate Life. Part light fixture, part objet d’art, Plate Light is a [working lamp](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flat-light) that happens to look more [experimental](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kawabi) than practical. Nevertheless, there is nothing but its looks to dispute the latter. Inspired by a photographic umbrella and a household dish rack, Plate Life is a mishmash design that is incredibly intriguing. As described by the designer, Plate Life is made up of "[two ceramic bowls](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/luno-lamp) and a light-source in a state of interdependency--the larger silvered plate directing the light source back upon itself.” The result is luminous, both figuratively and literally. It will also give living spaces a raw touch of modernism. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.5/10 - Popularity: 78% | Activity: 50% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Avant-garde Lighting:** Disruptive innovation opportunities may include experimenting with unconventional materials and designs to create unique lighting fixtures that double as art pieces. - **Mishmash Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunities may include incorporating diverse or seemingly unrelated elements to create designs that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. - **Raw Modernism:** Disruptive innovation opportunities may include exploring the use of industrial or raw materials in modern design to create pieces that are both rugged and refined. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Interior Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunities may include reimagining traditional lighting fixtures by incorporating unconventional materials and designs that seamlessly blend functionality and style. - **Art and Sculpture:** Disruptive innovation opportunities may include exploring the intersection of art and industrial design by creating pieces that are both functional and visually striking. - **Home Decor:** Disruptive innovation opportunities may include experimenting with industrial or raw materials in home decor to create pieces that add texture and character to living spaces. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Material-Exploring Industrial-Style Lighting](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/industrialstyle-lighting.md) - [Otherworldly Lighting Fixture Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/otherworldly-lighting-fixture.md) - [Suspended Halo Light Fixtures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lamplox-minimalist-floor-lamp.md) - [Sculptural Wooden Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/arc-lamp.md) - [Ecological Dual Lampshade Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/air-light.md) - [Brutalist Bedside Illuminators](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vestige-lamp.md) - [3D-Printed Mood Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/orbyt.md) - [Sleek Structural Lighting Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/emotional-lab-light.md) - [Illusory Multidimensional Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/drop-light.md)
