Planetariums come in a variety of shapes and sizes, which is exactly what Cardin Ramirez Julien and Aedifica experimented with for the design of the Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium.

The design looks like two telescopes peering up towards the sky. DesignBoom states that "the team emphasizes an intimate connection to nature in the visitor’s experience. Starry skies are typically viewed outside of urban areas. Thus, the intent was to implement the essential qualities of the outdoors into the building’s design." Given that the structure was built in Montreal, the second largest city in Canada, gazing up into a starry sky tends to be difficult. Moreover, the distinct cone shapes also help to distinguish the building from the surrounding architecture, which is difficult to compete with.
