# Idiosyncratic Draped Illuminators The Piedras Lamp Combines Unlikely Materials and Forms By Amelia Roblin | Published 2013-12-12 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/piedras-lamp References: [lilianaovalle](http://www.lilianaovalle.com/source/piedras-lamp.htm) There certainly isn't just one way, shape or form to manufacture a light fixture, but you probably haven't seen anything quite like the Piedras Lamp. This quirky object comprises some surprising elements and combinations for a look that's unfamiliar and fascinating. Designer Liliana Ovalle is ever interested in the properties of rocks, and this influenced her incorporation of them into this [illuminating sculpture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sculptural-lighting-designs). Real stones, however, were not included, for she chose to make organically modeled ones from sand-cast aluminum. Complete with small holes, the rocks suspend from tied material at the thick cloth's corners. This reinforces the drapery of the [ghostly white fabric](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/phantom-lighting), completely blocking out any glow. The Bright beams escape from the bottom of the Piedras Lamp, shining down to reveal the [welded metal structure](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/polyshape) that's been painted blue. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 0.3/10 - Popularity: 1% | Activity: 1% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Unconventional Lighting Fixtures:** Incorporating unlikely materials and forms into lighting design opens up opportunities to disrupt traditional interior design. - **Organic Imitations in Home Decor:** Crafting organic shapes through unconventional materials provides new possibilities for unique home decor. - **Sculptural Lighting Design:** Adding artistic elements to lighting fixtures creates unique focal points that can transform the atmosphere of a space. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Interior Design:** Incorporating unique lighting fixtures opens up new opportunities for interior designers to create distinctive spaces. - **Home Decor:** Exploring unconventional materials in home decor can allow for creative and visually striking design pieces. - **Lighting Manufacturing:** Experimenting with new materials and designs provides opportunities for disruption and innovation in the lighting industry. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Volcanic Stone Lighting](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/foscarini-lava-lamps.md) - [Volcanic Rock Light Collections](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/meta-parallel-black-collection.md) - [Artistic Shadow Play Illuminators](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/frero-tala-asa.md) - [Organically Shaped Shadow Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/loops-lamp.md) - [Stone-Inspired Illuminators](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/karim-rashid-kobble.md) - [Volcanic Lighting Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lighting-installation.md) - [Illuminating Stone-Made Table Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nau-design.md) - [Artfully Liquid-Like Light Collections](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cairn-lamp.md) - [Volcanic-Themed Light Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/stone-archive.md)
