The assailant was enraged over not only over the fact that Paul McCarthy's [sculpture resembled a butt plug](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/out-of-orifice), but that the artist himself was not French. Paul McCarthy went on to say, “But it is an [abstract work](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hughmanity). People may be offended if they want to refer to [it as a] plug, but, for me, it is more of an abstraction.” That wasn't the case for his attacker. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.0/10 - Popularity: 62% | Activity: 21% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Naughty](https://www.trendhunter.com/naughty) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Controversial Art Installations:** Creating art that pushes boundaries and challenges societal norms can create a buzz and generate interest and attention. - **Offensive Public Displays:** Art that is purposely provocative or offensive can spark debate and draw attention, but also carries the risk of backlash and physical harm. - **International Artistic Expression:** Artists from different cultural backgrounds bringing their unique perspectives and expressions to other countries can introduce new ideas and stimulate creativity. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Art and Entertainment:** Developing new and original art forms that push the boundaries of what is considered appropriate or taboo can create new markets and attract diverse audiences. - **Tourism and Hospitality:** Cities or locations that showcase the work of controversial artists can see increased tourism as visitors are drawn to see the art and experience the cultural impact of the works. - **International Relations:** The sharing of cultural expressions between countries can strengthen relationships and understanding, but also create tensions and misunderstandings that need to be addressed diplomatically. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Illuminated Christmas Tree Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/all-lit-up.md) - [Neon Illuminated Christmas Trees](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fluorescence.md) - [Modern Design-Exploring Art Objects](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pratone-chair.md) - [Plastic Bottle-Made Christmas Trees](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/caroline-chaptini.md) - [Statement Street Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/surreal-street-art-1.md) - [Cutout Christmas Tree Displays](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/christmas-tree-display.md) - [Tree-Integrated Mysterious Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tree-mural.md) - [Peace-Centric Oversized Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/peace-head.md) - [Quirky Santa Murals](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cushelle.md)
