# Pint-Sized Pencil Drawings Paul Chiappe Renders Photoreal Images on Confined Canvases By Jason Soy | Published 2012-02-12 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/paul-chiappe References: [juxtapoz](http://www.juxtapoz.com/Current/tiny-pencil-drawings-by-paul-chiappe) & [paulchiappe](http://www.paulchiappe.co.uk/index.html) Artists showing off their [photorealistic rendering capabilities](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/drawing-series) with nothing more than a [pencil](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/experimental-pencils) isn’t innovative per se, but Paul Chiappe differs from his peers in that he draws his images on ridiculously small canvases. The pictures themselves are about the size of a man’s thumb, but even more impressive is the amount of detail Chiappe is able to convey within these [miniature illustrations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hot-wheels-and-daniel-arsham). His ability to replicate a visual with barely any room to work in is simply astonishing. Look closely enough, in fact, and you may even convince yourself that you’re staring at a photograph. Paul Chiappe is based in Edinburgh and his creations are regularly exhibited stateside and in his native United Kingdom. He often uses vintage pictures as reference, so viewers are treated to microscopic visuals from yearbooks, classroom photos and personal portraits. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.3/10 - Popularity: 87% | Activity: 63% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Micro-art:** Opportunity to create miniature versions of existing art through photorealistic rendering. - **Extreme Detailing:** Opportunity to develop skills in rendering high-resolution images in confined spaces. - **Vintage References:** Opportunity to transform vintage photos into miniature illustrations with incredible detail. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Fine Arts:** Innovation opportunities exist for visual artists to create unique and eye-catching pieces that stand out in the market. - **Graphic Design:** Opportunity to incorporate the extreme detailing skills and micro-art techniques learned from this trend into creating visually stunning graphics for various industries. - **Photography:** Innovation opportunities exist for photographers to create miniature versions of their photographs with incredible detail and allow their work to stand out from the competition. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Miniature Artful Hip-Hop Landmarks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/danny-cortes.md) - [Limited Miniature Paintings](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pocket-paintings.md) - [Paper-Made Mosaic Artwork](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/real-life-architecture-exhibition.md) - [Stunning Origami Portraits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/origami-portaits.md) - [AI Line Drawing](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pencilify-ai.md) - [Public Art Displays](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/paul-anthony-smith.md) - [Archival Pigment Art Print](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/parallax.md) - [Realistic Sketch-Reflective Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/drawing-series.md) - [Statement Street Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/surreal-street-art-1.md)
