# Mythological Paper Cutouts Patrick Gannon Creates Art Exploring Tensions of Violence & the Sublime By Marica Zottino | Published 2011-10-31 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/patrick-gannon References: [visualnews](http://www.visualnews.com/2011/10/31/fanciful-characters-of-cut-paper/) & [pgannon](http://www.pgannon.com/pgannon_portfolio_2009.htm) Could you believe at a first sight that these artworks by Patrick Gannon are entirely made of cut-out paper (and sometimes wood)? His pieces mix up elements from his real life, such as his upbringing on a farm in New Jersey and the visual imagery of urban contemporary Japan (Patrick now lives in Fukuoka with his Japanese wife). All the subjects sum up this meeting of culture and style, coming out with intense, fairylike scenes, at once playful and dark. Patrick Gannon is fascinated by humankind and our secret personal mythologies and microcosmos, which often explore the continuously alternate tensions of violence and the sublime. Beautiful pieces with a soul and a message, Patrick Gannon's work is made with ancient techniques to make us reflect on our contemporary culture and inter-dependecies. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.1/10 - Popularity: 31% | Activity: 24% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Modern](https://www.trendhunter.com/modern) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Mythological Paper Cutouts:** An opportunity exists for creating new types of art and design using paper and wood cutouts. - **Exploring Culture and Style:** Culture mashups can provide a unique perspective on art and design. - **Mixing Playful and Dark Themes:** The combination of light and dark themes can create intriguing works of art. ### Who This Affects Most - **Art and Design:** The art and design industry can push boundaries by exploring ancient techniques and cultural mashups. - **Crafting and DIY:** The crafting and DIY industry can utilize paper and wood cutouts to create unique projects. - **Marketing and Advertising:** Marketing and advertising can use paper and wood cutouts to create visually striking campaigns. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Otherworldly Wooden Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wooden-sculptures-1.md) - [Stunning Origami Portraits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/origami-portaits.md) - [Paper-Made Mosaic Artwork](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/real-life-architecture-exhibition.md) - [Wooden Identity Art Forms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hughmanity.md) - [Digital Archetype Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/christian-rex-van-minnen-1.md) - [Laser-Cut Urban Artistry](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/laser-cut-city-maps.md) - [Geometric Wooden Art Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/aleph-geddis.md) - [Otherwordly Art Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/william-monk.md) - [Whimsical Spirit Art Shows](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/anima.md)
