# Sea Creature Bike Racks Parking Squid by Susan Robb is Artistic and Functional By Kevin Young | Published 2012-05-12 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/parking-squid-by-susan-robb References: [laughingsquid](http://laughingsquid.com/giant-squid-bicycle-rack/) & [susanrobb](http://www.susanrobb.com/parking_squid.htm) Giant squids are usually seen in the deep blue sea or in science fiction novels, but Parking Squid by Susan Robb is a massive squid sculpture that sits on the street. It's a [bike rack](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cargomate-bike-rack) with [squiggly tentacles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ikr-fork) to lock the bicycles to; perfect for bikers who sometimes have trouble securing their bikes to dinky little lock stands. The tentacular sculpture currently sits at the Seattle Center, but will be moved to a permanent home on some Seattle streets. It's an [architectural sculpture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fibredog) that provides artistry to the city along with functionality. It's the point of interactions and meetings while making the city look a little more funky. By the end of 2012, the city of Seattle will be more familiar with additional Parking Squids that will take over the streets. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.5/10 - Popularity: 57% | Activity: 9% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Sculptural Bike Racks:** The combination of artistry and functionality in bike racks presents an opportunity for artists and designers to create unique and eye-catching installations. - **Interactive Urban Art:** Urban art installations that encourage interaction and engagement with the community can offer new ways for cities to express creativity and promote cultural appreciation. - **Innovative Bike Security:** Innovative bike rack designs that prioritize security and ease of use can address the challenges cyclists face in securely parking their bikes in urban environments. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Public Art:** Public art organizations and artists have the opportunity to collaborate with cities to create captivating and functional installations that enhance urban spaces. - **Urban Design and Planning:** Urban planners can explore incorporating artistic bike racks and other interactive installations into city landscapes to create vibrant and dynamic environments. - **Bicycle Accessories and Security:** Companies in the bicycle industry can develop innovative bike rack designs that offer enhanced security features, catering to the needs of urban cyclists. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Architectural Midcentury Bike Racks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/draken-bicycle-stand.md) - [Underwater Bicycling Parking Lots](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/centraal-station.md) - [Smart Bike Docking Stations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/smart-bike-docking-station.md) - [Tri-Functional Bicycle Racks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/trifunctional-bicycle-rack.md) - [Modular Bike Racks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sonder-x-skarper.md) - [Underwater Bicycle Parks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ijboulevard.md) - [Sculptural Public Seating](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sculptural-public-seating.md) - [Bike-Friendly Outdoor Benches](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pinajarro-bench.md) - [Modular Cargo-Ready Bike Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cargorida.md)
