Amber Rousse created the paper curled map design through the [paper art method of quilling](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/museum-for-papirkunst), which is curling strips of paper to form various shapes and sizes then gluing them together. The paper map showcases the [relative heights of mountain](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/switzerland-passport) and features major ocean currents. The swirly paper designs add an aesthetic appeal that's sorely lacking in a lot of paper maps. Rousse spent about six months to create the quilled paper map. She first began the process by drawing an outline onto a cardboard, then curled several amounts of paper, which afterwards glued together to create the quilled paper map. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 0.7/10 - Popularity: 5% | Activity: 7% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 30% men, 70% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Quilled Paper Art:** The trend of quilled paper art provides an opportunity for artists to create unique and creative designs using paper strips, encouraging the creation of innovative products. - **Customized Paper Maps:** The trend of creating uniquely designed, paper maps using techniques like quilling provides an opportunity to disrupt the traditional mapping industry by offering custom and visually appealing paper maps. - **Aesthetic Map Design:** With the trend towards more visually appealing products, the map design industry has an opportunity to create more aesthetically pleasing and unique maps that offer both functionality and beauty. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Paper Products:** The paper products industry has an opportunity to embrace quilling as a popular trend, and create unique and innovative products using this technique. - **Cartography:** Innovation in the cartography industry can be driven by incorporating unique, visually-appealing designs into traditional map-making techniques, offering customization, including paper maps, and disrupting the traditional mapping industry. - **Art and Design:** The art and design industry can embrace quilling as a new art form that can be incorporated into many different projects, including paper maps, and offer unique and visually impressive designs that disrupt industry standards. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Sculptural Paper Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fragmenti.md) - [Map-Inspired Fleece Blankets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/xplorer-maps.md) - [Paper-Made Mosaic Artwork](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/real-life-architecture-exhibition.md) - [Stunning Origami Portraits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/origami-portaits.md) - [Sculptural Mixed-Media Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/folded-echoes.md) - [Paper-Formed Premium Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pastille.md) - [Topographic Wooden Coffee Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/topographic-coffee-table.md) - [Paper Mable-Made Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bentley-home.md) - [Pleated Paper Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/moleskine-and-issey-miyake.md)
