It may have been designed to take the appearance of something that it isn't, but it does so in a subtle enough way with formal properties that are appealing to the contemporary eye. Created for Cassina by Denis Vasset and Jean Louis Berthet, this [sculptural shelving unit](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cromatica) comes in two models. One moves from left to right with and inward curvature becoming an outward curve, while the other piece is its mirror image. When placed side-by-side, the pair of shelves take on the undulating surface of the pages of an enormous open book. The [lacquered wood Pagina Bookcase](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shelving-unit-01) embodies a whimsical but very appropriate form for a [library](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/reading-nooks), especially when treated with a white wash. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.7/10 - Popularity: 80% | Activity: 84% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Gen Alpha, Millennial - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Representational Furniture:** Opportunity to design furniture that takes the appearance of something that it isn't while maintaining formal properties that are appealing to the contemporary eye. - **Sculptural Shelving Units:** Opportunity to create unique shelving units that embody whimsical and appropriate forms for libraries and other settings. - **Undulating Surfaces:** Opportunity to utilize undulating surfaces as a design element in functional furniture. ### Who This Affects Most - **Furniture Design:** Furniture companies can explore new designs and forms for shelves and other furniture pieces that also serve a functional purpose. - **Home Decor:** Home decor companies can incorporate representational furniture into their product lines that are not only functional, but also visually appealing. - **Interior Design:** Interior designers can utilize sculptural shelving units and undulating surfaces as unique design elements in residential and commercial spaces. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Book-Storing Side Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bookgroove-bookrack.md) - [Minimalist Bookish Shelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/minimal-bookshelf.md) - [Sculptural Bookshelves Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sculptural-bookshelf.md) - [Expandable Bookcase Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/burrow-index-bookcase.md) - [Video Game-Like Bookcases](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tetris-bookcase.md) - [Sliding Wintery Landscape Bookshelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/manhwabang-bookshelf.md) - [Personality-Enhancing Side Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ordo-book.md) - [Speaker-Inspired Shelving](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lloyd-tex.md) - [Contemporary Clean-Line Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/magis.md)
