# Simplistic Wooden Slab Seats The Conceptual 'Pad Chair' Transforms in Seconds By Michael Hemsworth | Published 2021-06-19 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pad-chair References: [yankodesign](https://www.yankodesign.com/2021/06/18/the-pad-transforms-from-a-simple-flat-wooden-slab-to-a-complete-folding-chair/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+yankodesign+%28Yanko+Design+-+Form+Beyond+Function%29) The conceptual 'Pad Chair' has been designed by Shaohan Yang as a [space-saving seating solution](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/omega-chair) that would work to provide the perfect place to sit, while effectively disappearing when not in use. The chair is constructed with a series of [wooden strips](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hug-chair-1) that are interconnected with one another and will nest together when the furniture piece is folded. This will allow the unit to be easily unfolded when a seat is required to reveal a secure spot to sit indoors or out that is far more appealing from a design perspective when compared to conventional [folding chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/patan-chair). The conceptual 'Pad Chair' is the winner of the 2021 A’ Design Award and is reported to occupy just 1/11th of the space it takes up when opened when collapsed down. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.1/10 - Popularity: 63% | Activity: 19% | Freshness: 10% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/furniture) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Space-saving Furniture:** The Pad Chair's ability to collapse down to 1/11th its size when folded creates an opportunity for innovative, compact furniture designs. - **Design-forward Folding Chairs:** The Pad Chair's unconventional design provides disruptive innovation opportunities for folding chair aesthetics and functionality. - **Interconnected Wooden Furniture:** The Pad Chair's use of interconnected wooden strips opens up innovative possibilities for sustainable and modular furniture designs. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Furniture Manufacturing:** The Pad Chair's unique design presents an opportunity for furniture manufacturers to create compact and visually appealing furniture pieces for small spaces. - **Outdoor Recreation:** The Pad Chair's collapsible and easily transportable design could disrupt the outdoor recreation industry and provide a more convenient way to enjoy the outdoors. - **Sustainable Design:** The Pad Chair's use of wooden strips and modular design highlights opportunities for sustainable design in furniture and product manufacturing. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Sliding Flatpack Seating Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/folio-chair.md) - [Recycled Scissor-Like Folding Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fauld-chair.md) - [Flatpack Ultra-Modular Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nebula-chair.md) - [High-Quality Flatpack Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pagoda-chair.md) - [Ultra-Minimalist Folding Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/notch-folding-chair.md) - [Collapsible Posture Support Seats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ergonomic-portable-seat.md) - [Ultra-Simple Multifunctional Furniture Pieces](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/chairpf.md) - [Practical Folding Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/patan-chair.md) - [Single-Piece Wooden Chair Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/slide-table-1.md)
