# Shape-Shifting Robotic Art Federico Diaz's Outside Itself Responds to Light and Movement By Meghan Young | Published 2011-07-26 | Tech Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/outside-itself References: [fastcodesign](http://www.fastcodesign.com/1664570/federico-d-az-s-unveils-shape-shifting-robot-made-art-installation#6) & [outsideitself.org](http://www.outsideitself.org/gallery/index2.html) The Outside Itself art installation may seem futuristic and methodological, but there is a sinister element to the process that makes it appear more otherworldly than anything else. Comprised of two robots and [countless black spheres](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/black-void), this is what Fast Co Design describes as a "pixelated wave of death." Created by Prague artist Federico Díaz as a follow-up to his 2010 installation [Geometric Death Frequency--141](http://www.trendhunter.com/trends/geometric-death-frequency-141), the Outside Itself art installation is currently being exhibited at the Arsenale Novissimo in Venice. An interactive piece, Outside Itself responds to the movements and changes in ambient lighting, which constantly change the look and shape of the piece. The only consistent thing about the Outside Itself installation is that it will continue to grow, featuring nearly 500,000 spheres by the end of it. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.8/10 - Popularity: 84% | Activity: 81% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 70% men, 30% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Tech](https://www.trendhunter.com/tech) > [AI](https://www.trendhunter.com/ai) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Interactive Art Installations:** The Outside Itself art installation demonstrates the potential for interactive art installations that respond to movement and lighting, creating an immersive and ever-changing experience. - **Robotic Technology in Art:** The use of robots in art installations, such as the Outside Itself installation, opens up opportunities for the integration of technology and creative expression, pushing the boundaries of traditional art forms. - **Dynamic and Shape-shifting Art:** Artworks like Outside Itself that change and evolve in response to external factors like lighting and movement highlight the trend of dynamic and shape-shifting art, creating a captivating experience for viewers. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Art and Design:** The art and design industry can explore the integration of technology, robotics, and interactivity to create innovative and immersive art experiences, as demonstrated by the Outside Itself installation. - **Technology and Robotics:** The use of robotic technology in art installations opens up opportunities for collaboration between the technology and art industries, pushing the boundaries of both fields and inspiring new creative possibilities. - **Experiential Entertainment:** The concept of dynamic and shape-shifting art, as seen in the Outside Itself installation, can inspire the experiential entertainment industry to develop immersive and interactive experiences that engage and captivate audiences. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Interactive Kinetic Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/interactive-kinetic-sculptures.md) - [Wonderous Art Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/your-psychoacoustic-light-ensemble.md) - [Fluid Function Art Exhibits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/optical-flow.md) - [Robotic Digital Surveillance Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/accept-all.md) - [Thought-Provoking Interactive Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/antibodies-installation.md) - [Reflective Public Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flowers-and-butterflies-are-dancing.md) - [Kinetic Interaction Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/transmutation-observatory.md) - [Interactive Mountain Oracles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/whispering-mountains.md) - [Dynamic Moving-Illusion Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/moving-furniture.md)
