# Otherworldly Wooden Sculptures (UPDATE) Ben Butler By Meghan Young | Published 2014-07-29 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/otherworldly-wood-sculptures References: [fubiz.net](http://www.fubiz.net/2014/07/27/wood-sculptures-by-ben-butler/) & [benbutlerart](http://www.benbutlerart.com/) The otherworldly wood sculptures of Ben Butler, an artist and assistant professor living and working in Memphis, Tennessee and Quogue, New York, will drudge up images of sci-fi films and ideas of what the landscape of alien worlds would look like. The already natural material takes on abstract organic forms that look as though they belong on another planet, hence the [alien references](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/alien-vases). Working predominantly with small pieces of lumber, Butler is able to achieve great levels of detail with his otherworldly wood sculptures. Whether creating twisted forms or coral reef-like structures, the art pieces are breathtaking and slightly surreal. One of his original works, which had made headlines back in [2011](http://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ben-butler-zg-gallery-exhibition), even looked as though it was melting. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.6/10 - Popularity: 90% | Activity: 71% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Otherworldly Wood Sculptures:** Disruptive innovation opportunity - Develop new techniques and materials to create otherworldly wood sculptures that push the boundaries of traditional art. - **Abstract Organic Forms:** Disruptive innovation opportunity - Explore the use of abstract organic forms in various industries such as interior design, architecture, and furniture manufacturing. - **Surreal Art Pieces:** Disruptive innovation opportunity - Combine traditional art forms with surreal elements to create unique and thought-provoking artworks that challenge traditional notions of beauty and reality. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Art and Sculpture:** Disruptive innovation opportunity - Integrate technology and unconventional materials into the art and sculpture industry to create innovative and boundary-pushing artworks. - **Interior Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity - Incorporate abstract organic forms and otherworldly wood sculptures into interior design concepts to create visually striking and immersive spaces. - **Furniture Manufacturing:** Disruptive innovation opportunity - Explore the use of otherworldly wood sculptures as unique and artistic furniture pieces that cater to consumers looking for one-of-a-kind designs. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Geometric Wooden Art Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/aleph-geddis.md) - [Fantasy Sculptural Furniture Pieces](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/chris-wolston.md) - [Wooden Identity Art Forms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hughmanity.md) - [Human Torso-Inspired Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lene-bdker.md) - [Artful Wooden Furniture Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/knowledge-of-all-dark-things.md) - [Repurposed Wooden Vessels](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/darren-appiagyei.md) - [Monolithic Furniture Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/conversation-with-trees.md) - [Towering Reclaimed Wooden Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/louise-durham.md) - [Wooden Light-Hearted Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dream-sculpture.md)
