Oscar, the "bionic cat," has become the first cat in the world to get two rear prosthetic legs. The groundbreaking operation was conducted by veterinary surgeon Noel Fitzpatrick. In a horrific accident just nine months ago, Oscar lost both of his back paws and nearly died.

The specially-built artificial limbs are attached in such a way that Oscar the bionic cat can walk, climb and run--all in less than four months after the operation.

**Implications** - The quality and regularity of [prosthetic limbs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-nimble) are continuously expanding in human medicine, but these 'peg' implants take the technology to the animal kingdom. The implants are coated with hydroxyapatite, which enables bone cells to grow around the metal. The artificial paws are securely attached as the implants move through the skin and bone.
