# Minimalist Origami Sofas The Origami Sofa is Inspired by the Japanese Art and is Fully Functional By Allen Taylor | Published 2014-03-12 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/origami-sofa References: [dezeen](http://www.dezeen.com/2014/03/09/folding-sofa-uses-origami-to-transform-from-rug-to-two-seater/) & [yoshidayumi](http://yoshidayumi.com/) The Origami Sofa by Yumi Yoshida is a [self-supporting sofa](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/biboni-sofa) that uses the principles of the [ancient Japanese art of origami](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/origami-series) to sustain its structure. Each panel is covered in fabric and separated by folds indicating where the sofa should be folded to create the structure. The sofa can also be used as a floor mat; you could get creative as well and try to fold it in a new way to perform another function. The Origami Sofa is attractive and is definitely a conversation-starting piece. The other functional aspect of the sofa is that with a couple of them, you’re able to instantly set up a living room and then fold them back away to store them under a bed or even lay them out as a floor mat waiting to be used again. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.1/10 - Popularity: 90% | Activity: 56% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Minimalist Origami Furniture:** Opportunity for creating innovative furniture designs inspired by origami principles. - **Multi-functional Sofas:** Potential for developing sofas that can be easily transformed into different functional forms. - **Space-saving Design Solutions:** Opportunity to design furniture that can be compactly stored when not in use. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Furniture Manufacturing:** Potential for incorporating origami-inspired designs into furniture manufacturing processes. - **Interior Design:** Opportunity for interior designers to explore and incorporate minimalist origami furniture in their projects. - **Home Organization:** Solutions for creating space-saving furniture that can be easily stored in small homes or apartments. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Compact Collapsing Sofas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/acordion-modular-sofa.md) - [Collapsible Timber Sofa Beds](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ospite-folding-sofa.md) - [Collapsible Outdoor Furniture Pieces](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/origami-outdoor-furniture.md) - [Origami-Inspired Seating Capsule](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/origamiinspired-design1.md) - [Cocoon-Like Multifunctional Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/usofa.md) - [Portable Air-Filled Sofas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sofa-made-from-air.md) - [Modular Inflatable Furniture Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/transforming-sofa.md) - [Comforting Adaptable Sofa Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/baby-bird-reincarnation-3way-sofa-bed.md) - [Rolled-Up Wooden Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sofan.md)
