# Open-Source Ventilator Releases A NVIDIA Scientist Created a Cost Effective Open-Source Ventilator By Daniel Johnson | Published 2020-05-04 | Tech Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/opensource-ventilator References: [engadget](https://www.engadget.com/nvidia-open-source-ventilator-design-165732445.html) & [op-vent.stanford.edu](https://op-vent.stanford.edu/) Recently Bill Dally, a Chief Scientist for [NVIDIA](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/open-source-ai-infrastructure), created an open-source ventilator that can be effective in treating patients affected by [COVID-19](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ecoconscious-covid19-testing-kit). The open-source ventilator is also cost-effective, and it is comprised of two easily available materials, including a proportional solenoid valve and a microcontroller. The unit can be easily put together in only a few minutes and the prototype was created using only $400 of materials, using 3D printed parts. However, the price could go down if the unit was produced on a large scale. Dally released a statement about the cost-effective ventilator, “Our philosophy is to build the simplest possible ventilator that could be produced rapidly and inexpensively, but yet meet the needs of treating patients with COVID-19.” Image Credit: NVIDIA ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.1/10 - Popularity: 2% | Activity: 23% | Freshness: 9% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Tech](https://www.trendhunter.com/tech) > [Gadgets](https://www.trendhunter.com/gadgets) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Open-source Ventilators:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: The development of open-source ventilators could revolutionize the healthcare industry by making life-saving equipment more affordable and accessible. - **Cost-effective Medical Solutions:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: The creation of cost-effective medical devices, such as the open-source ventilator, has the potential to disrupt traditional healthcare pricing models and improve access to essential treatments. - **Rapid Prototyping and 3D Printing:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: The use of rapid prototyping techniques and 3D printing technology in healthcare enables quicker and more affordable development of medical devices, opening up possibilities for advancements in various industries. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Healthcare:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: The healthcare industry can benefit from the development of open-source ventilators and cost-effective medical solutions to improve patient care and reduce expenses. - **Technology Manufacturing:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: The manufacturing industry can explore opportunities to mass-produce cost-effective medical devices like open-source ventilators, enabling the efficient and widespread distribution of essential healthcare equipment. - **3D Printing:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: The 3D printing industry can expand its reach by collaborating with the healthcare sector to produce advanced medical devices quickly and at reduced costs. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Open Source Supercomputing Tools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/open-source-ai-infrastructure.md) - [Open-Source Self-Driving Tools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/openpodcar.md) - [Digitally Simulated Living Cells](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/simulated-living-cells.md) - [Virus-Detecting Breathalyzers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/virusdetecting-breathalyzer.md) - [Air-Controlling VR Masks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/airres-mask.md) - [Open-Source AI Models](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/baidu-ernie-5.md) - [Online Consultation AI Nurses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ai-nurses.md) - [Airflow-Optimized GPUs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/amp-extreme-airo.md) - [Air-Blowing Face Masks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/air-mask.md)
