# Chaotically Colorful Painted Collages Oliver Vernon's Works Depict Surreal Urban Landscapes By | Published 2013-06-14 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/oliver-vernon References: [lostateminor](http://www.lostateminor.com/2013/06/13/bizarrely-chaotic-paintings-by-oliver-vernon/) & [oliververnon](http://www.oliververnon.com/) California-based artist Oliver Vernon has created some of the most beautiful and chaotic pieces of contemporary art on the modern gallery scene. Each of his paintings depicts a jumbled landscape, often an urban one. Instead of striving for realism with accurate representations of cityscapes, Vernon chooses instead to create many different planes of vision, with buildings infringing on waterfalls, which in turn, overlap with baobab trees. The result is a multi-voiced work that takes many different analyses to interpret. Indeed, Vernon's works are practically impossible to interpret either correctly or wrongly. Each viewer has his or her own personalized opinion regarding Vernon's works. Since they are so [colorful and busy](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/colorscape-installation), Vernon's paintings cannot possibly have a single meaning or produce a single effect on viewers. Instead, these [multi-faceted artworks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/colorama) create an infinite number of responses in viewers, a confusion that marks them as true pieces of modern art. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 0.8/10 - Popularity: 12% | Activity: 4% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 30% men, 70% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Modern](https://www.trendhunter.com/modern) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Multi-faceted Interpretation:** The trend of artworks that allow for personal and varied interpretations, providing an immersive and engaging experience for viewers. - **Chaos and Color:** The trend of using chaotic and colorful elements in art to evoke a sense of energy, dynamism, and complexity. - **Urban Surrealism:** The trend of depicting surreal urban landscapes in art, combining elements of reality and imagination to create thought-provoking compositions. ### Who This Affects Most - **Contemporary Art:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Embrace the trend of multi-faceted interpretation in artworks to attract a diverse range of viewers and create engaging experiences. - **Interior Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Incorporate chaotic and colorful elements in interior design to add vibrancy and dynamic visual interest to spaces. - **Art Education:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Introduce urban surrealism in art education to encourage creativity, imagination, and unconventional thinking among students. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [3D-Printed Colorful Vessels](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/olivier-van-herpt-1.md) - [Wonderous Art Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/your-psychoacoustic-light-ensemble.md) - [Statement Street Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/surreal-street-art-1.md) - [Digital City-Inspired Art Works](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/grand-central-station.md) - [Otherwordly Art Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/william-monk.md) - [Glass Beaded Intricate Artworks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/painting-exhibition.md) - [Immersive Light Art Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/psychoacoustic-light-ensemble.md) - [Abstract Geometric Solo Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/impermanent-state-of-being.md) - [Artfully Dynamic Vessels](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/devin-wilde.md)
