# Continually Spiraling Staircases The Olafur Eliasson Infinite Staircase is Full of Twists and Turn By Gil Cohen | Published 2012-10-04 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/olafur-eliasson-infinite-staircase References: [likecool](http://www.likecool.com/Infinite_Staircase--Design--Home.html) & [flickr](http://www.flickr.com/photos/chrisk1982/8012079794/) You won’t need the StairMaster anymore as you find yourself continuously climbing the steps on the Olafur Eliasson Infinite Staircase. The swirled shape connects to itself, creating a continuous structure that looks more like an optical illusion. Hard to contemplate for a long time without getting a bit dizzy, the 9-meter tall staircase seems to be going upwards and downwards at the same time. This never ending spiraling staircase is located right outside the KPMG accounting firm offices building in Munich, Germany, making it convenient for co-workers to go for a stroll or get a quick workout in on their lunch breaks without having to stray too far away. The Olafur Eliasson Infinite Staircase is a structural beauty as well as a functioning set of stairs. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.0/10 - Popularity: 77% | Activity: 94% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Swirling Staircase Design:** Exploiting the optical illusion of a continuously spiraling staircase opens opportunities for unique architectural designs and experiential spaces. - **Functional Art Installations:** Combining art with functionality creates opportunities for businesses to enhance the aesthetic appeal of their spaces while providing practical benefits. - **Innovative Workplace Wellness:** Integrating unique elements like the Olafur Eliasson Infinite Staircase into office environments promotes employee well-being through physical activity and breaks from routine. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Architecture:** Architects can explore the potential of swirl-inspired staircase designs to create visually striking buildings that showcase innovation and creativity. - **Art:** Artists and art installations can leverage optical illusions and interactive elements to create captivating and thought-provoking experiences for viewers. - **Corporate Wellness:** Companies focused on workplace wellness can incorporate unique staircase designs to encourage physical activity and promote a healthy work culture. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Concrete Spiral Staircase Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cadenza.md) - [Bold Architectural Renovations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flat-iron-house.md) - [Dutch Barn Spiralled Staircase](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/julia-van-beuningen.md) - [Sculptural Townhome Staircases](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/atelier-pierre-thibault-1.md) - [Figure 8-Structured House](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-loop-house.md) - [Dynamic Bookend Lighting Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/stair-table.md) - [Timbered Passage Stair Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wooden-annex.md) - [Artfully Rotating Glass Pillars](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/panorama.md) - [Sculptural Experimental Artforms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ladder-series.md)
