# Catenary Sculptural Countertops The Ola20 Kitchen Complements the Grace of a Gifted Cook By Amelia Roblin | Published 2012-03-20 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ola20-kitchen References: [trendir](http://www.trendir.com/archives/006149.html) & [snaidero](http://www.snaidero.com/) Food preparation areas have long been left behind as the most utilitarian-looking rooms within homes. The Ola20 Kitchen transforms the convention of aesthetic practicality with a system of surfaces and supports that behave like sculptures. A heavy bank of [closed cabinetry](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/curved-cabinetry-collection) contributes valuable storage space to the modern cuisine, but this row of metallic cupboards has been modeled as a [monolithic mass](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ancora), elegantly expressed with smooth flush surfaces and stylish rounded edges. The pièce de résistance in the Snaidero and [Pininfarina](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/orbital) Ola20 Kitchen is the exquisite cantilevered countertop. It extends the working bench with a dynamic and light-footed form, propped up by a fluent U-shaped brace. While it brings beauty and lissomness to the bulk of culinary appliances, this statuesque element acts as a practical surface for meal prep and the perfect place to pull up a barstool. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.1/10 - Popularity: 38% | Activity: 47% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Sculptural Countertops:** Incorporating sculptural elements into kitchen countertops creates a visually stunning and functional space. - **Monolithic Design:** Designing cabinetry as a monolithic mass with flush surfaces and rounded edges adds an elegant touch to modern kitchens. - **Cantilevered Surfaces:** Using cantilevered countertops provides a dynamic and light-footed form that adds style and functionality to kitchen spaces. ### Where This Applies - **Interior Design:** Innovative kitchen designs that incorporate sculptural countertops and monolithic cabinetry can be applied in the interior design industry to create visually stunning and functional spaces. - **Home Improvement:** Cantilevered countertops and monolithic cabinetry designs offer opportunities for the home improvement industry to provide unique and elegant kitchen solutions. - **Furniture Design:** The concept of incorporating sculptural elements in countertops and creating monolithic designs can be applied in the furniture design industry to create visually appealing and functional kitchen furniture. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Elegant Kitchen Sink Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kitchen-sink-system.md) - [Dynamic Marble Sink Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/infinito.md) - [Freestanding Experimental Kitchens](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/experimental-kitchens.md) - [Custom Outdoor Kitchen Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tria.md) - [Colorful Textile Collaborative Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/zdora.md) - [Luxe Grooved Versatile Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cesar.md) - [Convertible Under-Counter Fridges](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/signature-kitchen-suite-mantle.md) - [Sculptural Living Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cromatica.md) - [Geometrically Inspired Faucets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fantini-oxy.md)
