The 'Nosewise Handheld Olfactometer' is a device that adds a sense of smell to VR and mixed-reality applications. The device, developed by researchers from Stockholm University and Malmö University, is a 3D-printed olfactometer that attaches to an [HTC](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/haritorax) [Vive](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nova-vr-senseglove) controller and releases different scents according to the game scenario.

The Nosewise Handheld Olfactometer uses four scent reservoirs that contain different scented liquids, such as fruity, floral, woody, and spicy. A Raspberry Pi Zero W and an Adafruit 815 servo controller control the opening and closing of the valves on the reservoirs, allowing the device to mix different scents in different ratios. A fan then blows the combined scents to the user’s nose through a tube. The device can be activated manually or automatically, depending on the game settings. The researchers have created a wine-tasting game to demonstrate the device’s capabilities, such as in the medical or therapeutic fields.
