# Praying Mantis Workstations The Futuristic Nexus Technical Commandstation Facilitates Efficiency By Amelia Roblin | Published 2013-02-20 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nexus-technical-commandstation References: [behance.net](http://www.behance.net/gallery/Nexus-Technical-Commandstation-Hybrid-Workstation/2809853) One might expect to see the Nexus Technical Commandstation present on the set of a sci-fi movie or TV show. Its fluid forms are sharp and sleek and it looks like it must be made from a cutting-edge malleable material that can be modeled and then rendered robust. This example of avant-garde furniture was designed by Andrew van der Merwe, incorporating a computer desk and an office chair into one. The sculptural base curves up to support the [swiveling seat](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dynamic-spinecare) while a thicker branch rises and morphs into a [blade-like writing surface](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spout) with a projecting desk lamp overhead. It might look like a single solid piece, but the Nexus Technical Commandstation's tabletop can separate and slide sideways to reveal a convenient storage space inside. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.2/10 - Popularity: 76% | Activity: 41% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial - Top markets: Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Futuristic Furniture:** Design and create furniture with fluid forms and sharp aesthetics for a futuristic look and feel. - **Multifunctional Workstations:** Combine multiple office functions into a single workstation, optimizing space and efficiency. - **Modular Storage Solutions:** Develop furniture designs that incorporate hidden storage compartments for added convenience and organization. ### Where This Applies - **Furniture Design:** Innovate and experiment with materials and forms to create avant-garde furniture pieces for modern consumers. - **Workspace Solutions:** Provide businesses with innovative and multifunctional office furniture solutions to enhance productivity and employee satisfaction. - **Interior Design:** Introduce modular storage solutions and futuristic furniture designs to transform interior spaces into modern and efficient environments. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Elegant Working Desk Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mindset-builtin-computer-desk.md) - [Fold-Down Workstation Desks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/workspace-furniture-solution.md) - [Futuristic Sculptural Desks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/arnardo-desk.md) - [Hybrid Schedule Workstation Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/humanex-x3.md) - [Insect-Like Seating Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-mantis-chair.md) - [Minimalist Modular Creative Workstations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/note-desk.md) - [Sleek Storage-Packed Workstations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/threesix-desk.md) - [Futuristic Gaming Desks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/project-sophia.md) - [Single-Piece Construction Workstations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nook-desk.md)
