Normally, paper is a byproduct of wood, but Mieke Meijer's NewspaperWood upcycles newspapers back into a more woodlike state and shows that the [lifespan of paper](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pape) doesn't end once it's been cut, printed and sold. Now that's a role reversal!

NewspaperWood is made by layering newspapers until they become [durable and resemble wood grains](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/superwood) and tree rings. The material is then used by design label Vij5 to construct some of the furniture you see here. From a distance, NewspaperWood is nearly indistinguishable from real wood. It's not until you get up close and find yourself reading yesterday's headlines that you truly appreciate NewspaperWood as a design achievement.

Though NewspaperWood is by no means a replacement for wood, it is nevertheless extraordinary to think that the flimsy pages you read every morning can turn into such [fine furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rosana-sousa).
