# New York Chess Boards Skyline Chess Has Designed a Chess Board With Famous NYC Buildings By Joey Haar | Published 2017-06-15 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/new-york-chess References: [contemporist](http://www.contemporist.com/new-york-city-buildings-chess-set/) & [kickstarter](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/805054982/skyline-chess-new-york-city-edition?ref=project_link) Skyline Chess, the design company behind the London chess board, is back with a new [Kickstarter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/manya-cynus) campaign to fund a similar concept: the New York chess board. As with the London board, Skyline's new venture will replace the classic chess pieces with detailed versions of iconic buildings in New York City. Chess and New York City have a history with one another. The archetypal image of old men playing chess in the park spurs from the public parks throughout New York's boroughs, and Bobby Fisher, one of the greatest chess players of the 20th century, is a native New Yorker. The New York chess board features the same buildings for both black and white. The king is represented by One World Trade Tower, the queen by the [Empire State Building](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/empire-state-building-hazy-ipa), the bishops by the Chrysler Building, the knights by the Flatiron Building, the rooks by the [Guggenheim Museum](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/toyhill-house), and the pawns by a typical brownstone townhouse. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.9/10 - Popularity: 55% | Activity: 54% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Iconic Chess Boards:** Designing chess boards with detailed versions of famous buildings creates a unique and visually appealing chess experience. - **City-inspired Chess Sets:** Creating chess sets that incorporate iconic buildings from different cities around the world adds a new level of cultural and geographical interest to the game. - **Collector's Edition Chess Sets:** Producing limited edition chess sets based on famous landmarks and buildings encourages chess enthusiasts and collectors to acquire unique and highly sought-after pieces. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Board Game Industry:** Incorporating iconic buildings and landmarks into chess boards presents an opportunity for the board game industry to create innovative and visually striking products. - **Tourism Industry:** Designing chess sets that feature famous buildings from different cities can attract tourists who wish to bring home a unique and culturally significant souvenir. - **Collectibles Industry:** Producing limited edition chess sets based on famous landmarks and buildings can tap into the growing market for collectible items and appeal to chess enthusiasts who are also collectors. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Architecturally Inspired Chess Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/baku-chess-set.md) - [Chess-Themed Art Collections](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/checkmate-collection.md) - [Building Block Chess Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lego-tower-chess-set.md) - [Big Apple Toy Blocks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/machi-town-new-york.md) - [Brutalist Chess Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mohmaya.md) - [Republic-Honoring Chess Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/chess-set-concept.md) - [Incredibly Elegant Chess Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/elevated-chess-set.md) - [Celestial Anti-Conflict Chess Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/another-kingdom-light-stage-chess-set.md) - [Minimalist Artful Chessboards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tarek-elkassouf.md)
