# Neglected Building Photography This Photographer Tries to Find the Beauty in Old Buildings By Mishal Omar | Published 2016-06-20 | Tech Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/neglected-buildings References: [archdaily](http://www.archdaily.com/789718/these-striking-photographs-portray-berlins-post-war-housing-developments-in-a-new-light) & [maltebrandenburg](http://www.maltebrandenburg.com/) Photographer Malte Brandenburg's photos of neglected buildings aim to recapture the beauty of these once-popular buildings in Berlin. After the second World War, Berlin's [post-war housing](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/jean-verville) was highly popular due to the space and affordability that these apartments offered. These neglected buildings have since fallen by the wayside and are seen as "blights on the city's skyline." By stripping away the buildings' surroundings, the artist manages to recapture these once-significant [pieces of architecture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pppler) and show them in a new light. By taking away any negative connotations these buildings may hold in context, the result is a series of photos that capture beautiful -- if slightly dilapidated -- architecture. The artist manages to perfectly capture the essence of what "art" is for many people -- the ability to find and create something beautiful out of something perceived as ugly or insignificant. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.0/10 - Popularity: 66% | Activity: 15% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Tech](https://www.trendhunter.com/tech) > [Photography](https://www.trendhunter.com/photography) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Neglected Building Photography:** Photographers finding beauty in neglected architecture through their work - **Post-war Urban Ruins:** Documenting the remnants of post-war urban development - **Architectural Revivalism:** Photographers and artists reviving interest in neglected architecture ### Where This Applies - **Photography:** Innovative photographic techniques capturing the essence of decaying buildings - **Tourism:** Bringing attention to previously disregarded architecture for art fans and urban explorers - **Architecture:** Inspiring new interest in outdated building styles and techniques for renovation or repurposing ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Pastel Tonal Apartment Blocks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/regensburg-quarter.md) - [Industrial Architecture-Themed Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/industrial-archaeology.md) - [Dramatic Doomsday Bunker Images](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/alastair-philip-wiper.md) - [Brutalist Concrete Tower Apartments](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/trellick-tower.md) - [Explosion-Damaged Sculpture Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/light-into-darkness.md) - [Protest Sand Architecture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bland-castles.md) - [Artist Apartment Conversions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/alan-prekop-studio.md) - [Repurposed Imperfection-Embraced Buildings](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/civic-architects-and-vdndp.md) - [Crafted Historic Villas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pppler.md)
