# Clear Cube Game Pieces The Negative Space Chess Set is a Unique Inside-of-the-Box Adaptation By Amelia Roblin | Published 2013-11-07 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/negative-space-chess-set References: [design-milk](http://design-milk.com/negative-space-chess-set-stefan-gougherty/) & [stefangougherty](http://www.stefangougherty.com/) Fans of the game are inevitably familiar with the standard figurines on a [chess board](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dune-chess-set), yet Stefan Gougherty set out to add another layer to the logic game, producing the Negative Space Chess Set. You won't immediately recognize any of the pieces, for they have been thoroughly abstracted into intriguing geometric forms. The designer dreamed up contemporary pawns, rooks, bishops, knights, queens and kings that greatly resemble ice cubes. These have been made for Geremia Design from [transparent acrylic material](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bionic) and they encase forms like tubes, screws and bottles that are capable of different behaviors on the game board. The Negative Space Chess Set pieces are then filled in with yellow or black paint to distinguish one side from the other. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.8/10 - Popularity: 58% | Activity: 17% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Abstract Game Pieces:** Designing game pieces with abstract shapes and concepts that differ from traditional game design, creating new aesthetics and engaging players in new ways. - **Transparent Game Pieces:** Utilizing transparent materials to create game pieces, which are both visually appealing and modern which can give new heights in design and makes a fun approachable game for all ages and gender. - **Color-coded Game Pieces:** Using different colored paint to differentiate between players' game pieces, gamifying elements of traditional game design and targeting usability requirements of differently-abled communities. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Gaming:** Incorporating abstract and transparent game pieces in board, customizable, and digital games to enhance user experience, increasing player engagement and making them innovative. - **Design and Fashion:** Creating products that merge fashion and design and attract users with accessibility features promoting inclusivity and innovative design. - **Visual Art and Home Decor:** Using abstract art and game design to create products that target consumers looking for modern and unique household items that can also act as art pieces and are a great gift for people who love to play games. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Brutalist Chess Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mohmaya.md) - [Minimalist Monolithic Chess Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/minimalist-chess-set.md) - [Flat-Pack Chess Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/jigsaw-chess-set.md) - [Celestial Anti-Conflict Chess Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/another-kingdom-light-stage-chess-set.md) - [Ceramic Chess Seating Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/chair-chess.md) - [Incredibly Elegant Chess Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/elevated-chess-set.md) - [NYC-Inspired Structural Chess Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/chess-nyc.md) - [Building Block Chess Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lego-tower-chess-set.md) - [Beautifully Artful Chess Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dune-chess-set.md)
