# Discordant Music Boxes The 'Music Construction Machine' Plays at the Turn of a Crank By Joey Haar | Published 2016-07-11 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/music-construction-machine References: [gizmag](http://www.gizmag.com/niklas-roy-music-construction-machine/44253/) & [niklasroy](http://www.niklasroy.com/project/191/MCM) Niklas Roy's Music Construction Machine towers over a typical music box. Approximately the size of an industrial shipping crate, the glass-enclosed machine contains three instruments -- an electric guitar, a [drum set](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sound-maestro), and an [electric keyboard](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/working-synth) -- that are hooked up to a Rube Goldberg-esque labyrinth of pulleys, gears and sprockets. When viewers and listeners turn a large crank outside the machine, the instruments take up a discordant symphony. The atonality of the installation isn't by accident. Rather, Roy espouses that, "as we all have different tastes in music, I decided to abandon the traditional concept of a music box," swapping out pre-programmed melodies for randomized noise. The Music Construction Machine is on display in the Plac Nowy Targ, a plaza in Wroclaw, Poland, and is one of the installations in the city's cultural capital program. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.2/10 - Popularity: 16% | Activity: 41% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Randomized Noise Music:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Develop customizable music boxes that generate randomized noise instead of pre-programmed melodies, catering to individuals with unique musical tastes. - **Interactive Mechanical Installations:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Create large-scale mechanical installations that allow viewers to actively participate in creating discordant and experimental music. - **Alternative Music Experiences:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Design unconventional music experiences that challenge traditional notions of melody and composition, appealing to adventurous music enthusiasts. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Music Box Manufacturing:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Incorporate randomized noise generation technology into music box manufacturing, diversifying product offerings and attracting new customers. - **Art and Sculpture:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Merge technology and artistic expression to create interactive sculptures and installations that blur the boundaries between visual art and music. - **Music Event Production:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Organize music events that feature immersive installations and unconventional performances, catering to audiences seeking unique and boundary-pushing musical experiences. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Minimalist Lantern-Like Music Boxes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/reuge-onk.md) - [Kinetic Art Objects](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/la-machine.md) - [Coffee Ground-Made Music Boxes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/snowie.md) - [Coffee Ground Music Boxes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/christmas-music-box.md) - [Gamified Music-Making Machines](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/beat-machine.md) - [Musical-Themed Kinetic Structures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/daydreamer.md) - [Tape Deck Instruments](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/magnetic-folklore.md) - [Feline-Friendly Music Accessories](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cat-music-box.md) - [Stackable Modular Synths](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/3tonic.md)
