The [United States Navy](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/firefly-drone) recently released information regarding its new [unmanned aerial vehicle](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/helsing-ca1-europa), the MQ-4C Triton. The spy plane’s stated mission is “Broad Area Maritime Surveillance,” which in military-speak means spying on everything and anything across huge swaths of the ocean from the air. The [US Navy](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/stavatti-aerospace-sm39-razor) purports that this will afford game-changing intelligence when conducting its operations.

The drone was designed by Northrop Grumman, the world’s fourth largest defense contractor. This is also the company that brought the world the famous B-2 stealth bomber, the F-18 fighter-jet and the RQ-4 Global Hawk, which is also a surveillance aircraft.

While the politics around defense contracts and military practice is often controversial, few could argue that the engineering behind a vehicle like the MQ-4C Triton is anything but top notch.
